The Experience
Are you a distributed systems expert passionate about building large-scale database technologies that support relentless growth and innovation?
We’re looking for experienced Core Database Internals Engineers with a strong background in database internals and distributed systems to join a team responsible for architecting, developing, and testing the next generation of cloud-native database. You’ll join a team of highly skilled, motivated software engineers and database experts, designing and developing robust, highly scalable software products to support Salesforce’s rapid growth.
You’ll need familiarity with database internals, distributed systems, or networking; interest in systems programming; strong software engineering skills; and enthusiasm for working on complex, highly concurrent, scalable, and resilient systems. You should have a track record of end-to-end ownership of architecture, design, implementation, monitoring, testing, and product support on large, mission-critical systems at petabyte scale.
Areas you may work on include logging/recovery, distributed lock management, distributed transactions, networking, cluster management, replication, high availability, monitoring, and serviceability. We work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative, agile environment. We’re a hybrid team that values end-to-end service ownership - from concept to architecture, design to implementation, and testing to deployment and customer support.

What You'll Actually Be Doing
- Design and develop core distributed database system functionality..
- Develop new architecture and designs to solve complex scalability problems..
- Generate ideas to improve robustness and performance..
- Implement comprehensive functional and system tests for your area of responsibility and for overall database quality..
- Debug issues, conduct root cause analysis, and diagnose defects..
- Actively participate in the release and deployment process..
- BS or higher degree in Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience..
- MS or PhD in databases or distributed systems is a plus..
- Strong CS fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems..
- 6+ years of experience in systems or database internals programming..
- 6+ years of experience designing, building, and supporting large-scale systems..
- Deep expertise in distributed computing (e.g., system architecture, communication, distributed consensus, and transactional protocols)..
- Strong understanding of low-level operating system concepts, including multi-threading, memory management, networking, storage, performance, and scale..
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills, with a results-oriented approach and good ideas for innovation..
- Ability to learn quickly and deliver high-quality code in a fast-paced, dynamic, agile team environment..
- Strong Java or C programming skills..

Responsibilities
Design, develop, test, and support core functionality for a cloud-native distributed database, addressing complex scalability, robustness, and performance challenges. Own database features end to end, including debugging and root cause analysis, system quality, and participation in release and deployment processes.
Requirements
Requires a bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent practical experience, at least six years of experience in systems or database internals programming and large-scale systems, and strong distributed computing expertise. Candidates should have strong Java or C programming skills, knowledge of low-level operating system concepts, and the ability to deliver high-quality work in a collaborative, agile environment; a master's or PhD in databases or distributed systems is a plus.
