Senior Electrical Designer - Marine Electrification
SBMT Solutions Ltd.
SBMT Solutions is looking for an experienced Electrical Designer to help deliver the next generation of electric and hybrid vessels. You’ll work on battery systems, electric propulsion, power distribution, automation, and shore charging - taking designs from engineering concepts through equipment manufacture and shipyard installation.
This is a hands-on role with real ownership. You’ll develop and manage the drawing packages that panel builders and shipyards work from, maintain our electrical design standards and component libraries, and work directly with engineers, equipment manufacturers, and installation teams to get systems built properly.
What you’ll do
- Develop and manage electrical design packages for switchboards, control panels, automation systems, and vessel installations.
- Produce single-line diagrams, power and control schematics, panel layouts, wiring and termination drawings, cable schedules, bills of materials, and installation details.
- Own and maintain electrical drafting standards, design style specifications, drawing templates, naming conventions, and document presentation.
- Build and maintain reusable component libraries, including symbols, footprints, manufacturer information, technical attributes, and associated parts.
- Coordinate equipment build packages with manufacturers, resolve drawing and assembly queries, and incorporate approved changes.
- Coordinate shipyard installation packages, including equipment interfaces, cable routing, terminations, and installation requirements.
- Maintain drawing consistency, revision control, and traceability from design development through issued-for-construction and as-built documentation.
- Review drawings for completeness, accuracy, manufacturability, and practical installation.
- Improve our design workflows through standardization, automation, and effective use of modern electrical CAD tools.
What you’ll bring
- At least five years of relevant electrical design and drafting experience, ideally involving industrial control panels, switchboards, power distribution, or automation systems.
- Demonstrated responsibility for managing electrical drafting standards or design style specifications, including templates, drawing conventions, and quality requirements.
- Experience developing and maintaining electrical CAD component libraries, including part attributes, symbols, and manufacturer data.
- Strong proficiency with CADMATIC Electrical or other electrical CAD platform such as EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, or a comparable system.
- A practical understanding of how electrical equipment is assembled, wired, installed, tested, and maintained.
- Experience managing coordinated drawing packages through reviews, revisions, manufacturing, and installation.
- The ability to interpret engineering requirements, identify gaps, and work independently while knowing when to seek engineering input.
- Strong attention to detail and clear communication with engineers, panel builders, suppliers, and installation teams.
Experience we’d particularly value
- Marine electrical systems and shipyard installation practices.
- Battery energy storage, DC distribution, electric propulsion, variable-frequency drives, or shore charging.
- PLC and distributed I/O systems, instrumentation, and industrial communications.
- Marine classification requirements and IEC electrical drawing conventions.
- CAD automation, data-driven design, and AI-assisted tools that reduce repetitive work and improve consistency.
Why this role
You’ll work on real vessels and substantial electrical systems, with a direct connection between what you design and what gets built. In a small, technically focused team, your experience will shape both the project deliverables and the way we work.
We’re looking for someone who enjoys making complex systems clear, buildable, and well documented - and wants to help move marine electrification forward.
