Original job description

Optomechanical Engineer

Location: Sherbrooke Employment Type: Full-Time (40 hours) Department: Operations – Engineering

About Us

SBQuantum is a seed-stage startup at the forefront of magnetic sensing innovation. Our vision is to unlock the full potential of magnetic intelligence through our proprietary quantum diamond technology.

By combining diamond-based quantum sensors with advanced AI-driven software, we transform complex magnetic field data into actionable, high-value insights. Our solutions enable accurate magnetic mapping and object detection in environments where traditional sensing technologies - like GPS, radar, imagery, or sonar - cannot perform.

From public safety and defence to space exploration, our multidisciplinary team of engineers, physicists, and data scientists is redefining how the world perceives magnetic signals - turning invisible complexity into clear, useful intelligence.

Why Join Us

We’re a small, fast-moving, and ambitious team building something truly transformative. At SBQuantum, you’ll have the opportunity to shape cutting-edge quantum sensing technology from the ground up, collaborate with passionate experts across physics, data science, and engineering., and contribute directly to solving real-world challenges across critical industries.

Who We’re Looking For

We’re seeking a proactive and driven individual with experience in designing low noise, robust optomechanical systems in a startup environment. If you thrive in fast-paced, multidisciplinary environments and love working on hard problems with real-world impact, we’d love to meet you!

Be part of the next generation of quantum sensing and data-driven innovation. Join SBQuantum and help us build the magnetic intelligence of tomorrow!

The Role

As Optomechanical Engineer, you will own the evolution of SBQuantum's diamond quantum magnetometer optomechanical subsystem. You will design, fabricate, test, and industrialize the optomechanical architecture of a quantum sensor that enables navigation where GPS is unavailable. Acting as the bridge between research and product development, you'll transform breakthrough optical concepts into rugged, manufacturable systems capable of operating reliably aboard drones, aircraft, and spacecraft. Your mission is simple: ensure our sensors perform just as well in the field as they do in the lab.

What You’ll Do

Transform laboratory prototypes into rugged, manufacturable quantum sensors capable of delivering laboratory-grade performance in real-world operating environments.
Own the design, simulation, development, testing, and continuous improvement of the optomechanical architecture of SBQuantum’s magnetometer.
Design precision laser modules, low-noise photodetection optics, fiber routing, micro-optical assemblies, thermal architectures, and mechanical enclosures.
Integrate optical, microwave, thermal, and magnetic subsystems into a compact, high-performance sensing head.
Design products optimized for low Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP), manufacturability, reliability, environmental ruggedness and magnetic cleanliness.
Lead Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and root cause investigations.
Develop precision assembly procedures, optical bonding processes, adhesive selection strategies, and fiber termination methods.
Collaborate with external optical design consultants, reviewing designs, challenging assumptions, validating simulations and translating advanced optical designs into manufacturable hardware.
Support the R&D team by designing and building optical laboratory setups and engineering prototypes used to validate new concepts.
Lead the integration of new R&D developments into future generations of SBQuantum products.

What We’re Looking For

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, engineering physics, or a related discipline with a strong background in optics or optomechanics.
5+ years of experience designing precision optomechanical systems (10+ years preferred).
Experience taking products from prototype through manufacturing.
Experience designing optomechanical parts, assemblies, thermal and structural simulations.
Experience integrating lasers, fiber optics, micro-optics, and precision mechanical components.
Experience with thermal management and vibration-resistant mechanical design.

Nice-to-Haves

Experience with Zemax
Python programming experience.
Experience in aerospace, photonics, precision instrumentation, or magnetometer technologies.

What We Offer

Competitive salary and meaningful equity.
Opportunity to be an early team member shaping both the technology and the culture.
Flexible, collaborative work environment.
Direct impact: your work will shape breakthrough products in a cutting-edge field.
Professional growth opportunities as we scale.

At SBQ, we are mission driven and collaborate with people independently of gender, race, beliefs, citizenship, orientation and value unconventional paths. Let's meet!
