Position: Future Science Leaders Teaching and Laboratory Assistant

Reports to: Program Manager, Future Science Leaders

Science World is a mission-based, charitable organization that supports the development of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Design and Math) literacy across British Columbia. Our mission is to ignite wonder and empower dreams through science and nature and our purpose is Science for All.

Our Science for All strategy is to revitalize Science World with a substantial capital plan to replace critical infrastructure, enhance the visitor experience and develop new content across all our channels under the themes of Regeneration of the Planet, Human Health, and Inclusion. Our plan is to ensure that people throughout British Columbia, especially under-represented communities, have access to high quality, informal STEAM learning. Through our onsite, online and outreach programs, Science World seeks to spark curiosity and wonder in STEAM and support development of talent across communities in the province.

As a facility, Science World is generally open to the public seven days a week, with some extended evening hours in the summer months. Typical office hours are Monday to Friday 8:00am – 5:30pm, with front-facing and operational teams also working a variety of shifts including weekends, holidays and evenings. Hours of work and other related requirements will be scheduled according to business needs and this may include special events on evenings, weekends and holidays.

Future Science Leaders (FSL) is Science World’s flagship youth science and leadership program. In this program, students are part of a powerful peer network made up of some of BC’s most talented students. Students meet and learn from BC’s top science, technology, and business leaders and are supported by a team of staff and volunteer mentors.

Position Description:

Working as a member of the Extracurricular Programs Team, the Future Science Leaders (FSL) Teaching and Laboratory Assistant perform duties to support both classroom and laboratory learning in the Year 1 program and helps to create an engaging and positive learning space. Working as a member of a larger team which includes the Program Manager, Experiential Learning Specialist, and Program Facilitators, they must both be able to collaborate and take initiative.

The FSL Year 1 (Discover) program invites grade 10 and 11 students to participate in learning and skill-building activities in a wide variety of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Design, Math) topics led by FSL staff and by guest experts. Through working on inquiry projects in peer groups, they develop a foundation in research, analysis and communication skills.

The FSL Teaching Assistant must be comfortable working with and mentoring high school students (Grades 10-11, class size 20-25) who are learning STEAM topics at university level.

This position requires an approachable, organized, and self-motivated individual who can observe needs and step in to assist. No previous experience is necessary as a teaching or laboratory assistant. The successful candidate will model curiosity, creativity, and a growth mindset for program participants.

Key Responsibilities:

Attend the Discover (Year 1) program sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30pm-9:00pm. Note that two sessions run consecutively from 4:00pm-6:00pm and 6:30pm-8:30pm on both Tuesdays and Thursdays
Work with the Experiential Learning Specialist and Facilitator, to welcome students into the building
Help to facilitate classroom and lab lessons by activities such as distributing supplies, offering guidance and mentorship to students, as well as documenting sessions through photography
Work with the Experiential Learning Specialist and Facilitator to prepare materials for laboratory activities, clean and maintain an orderly work environment, and model correct procedures to students when appropriate
Assist in the recruitment of students for the following program year for all programs by reviewing applications and attending interviews
Support other FSL programs when needed, including chaperoning field trips and supporting FSL events (Winter Science Nights, Spring Student Showcase)
May lead at least one lesson within the program as agreed upon with the experiential learning specialist
Operate within the philosophy, culture and values of Science World
Perform other related duties as required to fulfill any changing business needs of this role

Qualifications:

Over the age of 18
Capable of working independently and as part of a team
Must be self-motivated, flexible, and enthusiastic
Satisfactory completion of a Vulnerable Sector Check will be required
An undergraduate degree in a STEAM field (completed or ongoing) is an asset
Experience working with youth is an asset
Being an FSL student alumni is an asset

This is a unionized position represented by CUPE 1004. The compensation rate is $21.38/hour.

After successfully completing probation, will be eligible to join the Voluntary RRSP/TFSA Plan and receive paid time off (sick, wellness days).
