The Team

Global Banking and Markets Engineering (GBME) is the fast-moving, award-winning technology engine that powers Scotiabank’s Corporate, Investment Banking and Capital Markets businesses.

The Role

GBME is searching for a Lead Software Engineer who is eager to boost capabilities of capital markets products and analytics platforms.

The successful candidate will have to be a seasoned technical and engineering mindset. You will work closely with business teams and cross functional engineering leaders to develop and implement market leading solutions for the various projects within Global Banking and Markets Engineering (GBME).

In this exciting role, you’ll apply your analytical skills to design, and develop applications that deliver excellence, effectiveness, and value to our business partners and customers.

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:

Lead complex transformational solutions and integrations, end to end across various projects in GBME, producing actionable and complete specifications, writing production quality code, and production implementation(s)
Advocate for professional-level solutions, code quality, and modern engineering practices
Independently develop, test, and deploy complex custom components using vendor APIs in Java or relatable technology.
Design test sets (automate where possible) using vendor and in-house developed tools; enhance testing tools as needed.
Design, deliver and enhance new and current solutions and applications, being committed to writing the most efficient, scalable code possible, and continuously find improvements.
Continuously partner with Architecture team on the design and integration of scalable solutions
Improve the end user experience by finding scalable solutions and addressing complex ad hoc queries.
Proven experience and mentoring and guiding other developers.
Effectively communicate with technical and non-technical audiences.
Coach and train end users (as needed).

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We’d love to work with you if you have:

8+ years of experience in enterprise application development using modern development language (eg. Java or Python or .NET/C#).
8+ years of experience using Linux or Unix, including related scripting.
8+ years of experience with SQL and/or other query languages and database design.
4+ years of experience with data technologies and databases, preferably in one or more of: Postgres, MSSQL, Oracle DB, Apache NiFi, Apache Kafka, Apache ElasticSearch, comfortable working with large datasets
Experience with front end technology (eg. React, Angular, JavaScript, etc)
Experience with automation / scheduling technology (eg. CRON, Tidal, Airflow, etc)
Experience with DevOps tools (eg. GIT, Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, etc.)
Working knowledge of programming design patterns and best practices
Excellent communication skills to varying audiences including executive leadership and non-technical resources.
Curious in nature, and consistently on the look-out for process improvements
The candidate must be able to interact and coordinate with numerous internal teams including operations and application support groups
Strong ability to work on several concurrent assignments involving various technologies and environments

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)

Experience working on data transformations
Experience in Cloud (GCP / Azure) or Kubernetes (GKE) computing is a plus
Knowledge of Capital Markets workflows and products is an asset
Experience in application / solutions architecture
Previous Scotiabank experience and knowledge of internal processes is a great asset.
