Construction Business Development Manager

Toronto, ON

We are working with an established Canadian construction organization that is continuing to grow its presence in Ontario and is looking for a Business Development Manager who wants the opportunity to help build something.

This is not simply a role for someone who wants to maintain an existing client list.

We are looking for a genuine business developer. Someone who enjoys opening doors, creating relationships, finding opportunities before everyone else knows about them and turning conversations into business.

The successful candidate could come directly from a general contractor, but they do not have to.

We are interested in speaking with business development professionals who have built their careers anywhere within the broader construction industry, including consulting engineering, architecture, general contracting, construction subtrades, development or other closely related environments.

What matters most is that you understand the construction market, know how projects and relationships develop, and have demonstrated that you can create new business.

This is also an opportunity to make a name for yourself.

The organization has an established Canadian platform and ambitions for continued growth in Ontario. The foundation is there, but there is significant room for the right person to create momentum, develop relationships and become an important part of how the business grows in this market.

What You’ll Be Doing

Create new business opportunities across the Ontario construction market by identifying prospective clients, upcoming developments and potential projects
Build relationships with developers, owners, architects, engineers, consultants, contractors, subtrades and other professionals who influence construction decisions
Use your existing network to open doors while actively building new relationships across the industry
Develop opportunities from the earliest stages rather than simply waiting for formal tenders or requests for proposals
Stay close to the market and identify projects, clients and developments well before they formally come to market
Turn market intelligence, relationships and conversations into a disciplined business development pipeline
Work closely with leadership, estimating, preconstruction, operations and marketing to determine which opportunities make sense to pursue
Participate in client meetings, presentations, interviews and pursuit strategies
Help position the organization with new clients and develop relationships that can produce repeat business over time
Maintain clear visibility into active opportunities, developing relationships and future pipeline
Represent the organization at appropriate industry events, networking functions and client activities

What We’re Looking For

Approximately 5 to 10 years of relevant business development or client development experience within the construction related marketplace
Experience could come from general contracting, consulting engineering, architecture, construction subtrades, development, commercial real estate or another related sector
A genuine hunter mentality and demonstrated ability to create new relationships rather than simply manage existing accounts
Evidence that you have personally helped generate new clients, opportunities or measurable business
A strong understanding of how construction projects are developed, influenced, pursued and ultimately awarded
Existing relationships within the Ontario construction, development or real estate community
Comfort working with senior decision makers, owners, developers, consultants and other industry stakeholders
Strong commercial instincts and the ability to identify which relationships and opportunities deserve attention
Confidence presenting, networking and representing an organization in the market
The persistence and organization required to manage long sales cycles and multiple developing relationships at the same time
Most importantly, we are looking for someone who gets energy from building.
Someone who wants more than a title.
Someone who would enjoy being able to look back several years from now and say that they were one of the people who helped establish and grow the business in Ontario.
Experience within multi residential, commercial, hospitality and other private sector building markets would be particularly relevant. Institutional, post secondary and municipal experience would also be considered valuable.

Compensation Transparency

The expected compensation range for this role is $120,000 to $150,000 annually, plus package, depending on experience, skills, qualifications, certifications and overall fit for the position.
