Original job description

Mechanical & Electrical Construction Inspector

Location: Greater Toronto Area, Ontario

Travel: Regular travel throughout Canada

Salary: $100,000–$125,000 annually, based on experience

Employment Type: Full-time, permanent

SearchLabs is working on behalf of an established Canadian consulting engineering firm to recruit an experienced Mechanical & Electrical Construction Inspector.

This is a field-focused position for someone who understands how mechanical and electrical building systems are installed, tested, coordinated, and completed in an active construction environment.

The successful candidate will conduct site inspections and field reviews on projects across Canada, helping ensure that installed work generally conforms to the engineering drawings, specifications, approved shop drawings, and intended design.

This opportunity may suit someone from a mechanical or electrical contractor, skilled-trades, commissioning, construction-administration, inspection, or consulting engineering background. A practical understanding of construction and the ability to communicate effectively with contractors and trades will be more important than following one specific career path.

The Role

Working with the firm’s engineering and project teams, you will manage inspections across a varied portfolio of approximately 20–30 active projects.

The portfolio includes projects of different sizes and duration. Some assignments may involve recurring inspections throughout construction, while others may require only one or two site visits.

Projects may include:

Retail stores and shopping centres
Grocery and food-store environments
Commercial buildings
Offices and tenant improvements
Industrial facilities
Warehouses and distribution centres
Refrigerated or temperature-controlled spaces
Multi-location construction and renovation programs

Responsibilities

Conduct mechanical and electrical construction inspections and field reviews.
Review installed work for general conformity with the project drawings, specifications, approved shop drawings, and applicable requirements.
Inspect mechanical systems such as HVAC, plumbing, drainage, refrigeration, controls, fire protection, and associated equipment.
Inspect electrical systems such as power distribution, lighting, emergency power, fire alarm, communications, security, and associated equipment.
Identify incomplete, deficient, improperly coordinated, or non-conforming work.
Prepare clear and timely field-review reports, including photographs, observations, deficiencies, and required follow-up.
Communicate directly with general contractors, site superintendents, mechanical and electrical subcontractors, tradespeople, suppliers, clients, and consultants.
Coordinate technical questions and site conditions with the firm’s engineers and designers.
Monitor the progress and quality of mechanical and electrical installations.
Participate in deficiency reviews, testing, commissioning, occupancy, substantial-performance, and project-closeout activities.
Confirm that deficiencies have been addressed and document outstanding items.
Organize site visits, reporting requirements, deficiencies, and follow-up activities across multiple active projects.
Represent the consulting engineering firm professionally and constructively at project sites.

Travel

This role requires regular travel to project sites across Canada.

Depending on project activity, the Inspector should

generally expect:

Air travel approximately once per week.
Approximately one overnight trip per week during busier periods.
Some periods with only one or two overnight trips per month.
Regular local and regional travel within Ontario.
Occasional early-morning, evening, or off-hours visits based on construction schedules.
Independent coordination of travel, site access, inspections, and reporting deadlines.

Candidates must be comfortable with frequent travel and managing a geographically dispersed project portfolio.

Candidate Profile

We are interested in candidates with backgrounds such as:

Mechanical or electrical contracting
Mechanical or electrical skilled trades
Building-systems commissioning
Testing, adjusting, and balancing
Consulting engineering
Construction administration
Construction inspection
Quality assurance or quality control
Facilities, building operations, or technical field services

You may be a licensed tradesperson, engineering technologist, commissioning specialist, experienced superintendent, construction inspector, or consulting engineering professional.

Experience inspecting both mechanical and electrical systems is preferred, although candidates with deep expertise in one discipline and strong exposure to the other will also be considered.

Qualifications

Approximately seven or more years of relevant construction, contracting, trades, commissioning, inspection, or consulting experience.
Strong practical knowledge of mechanical and/or electrical building systems.
Experience reading construction drawings, specifications, shop drawings, equipment submissions, and installation details.
Ability to identify deficient workmanship, incomplete installations, coordination problems, and deviations from the design documents.
Understanding of construction sequencing, testing, commissioning, deficiencies, and project closeout.
Familiarity with relevant Canadian building, electrical, fire, plumbing, and mechanical codes and standards.
Strong communication skills and the ability to speak credibly with contractors and trades.
Clear, concise, and professional written-reporting skills.
Ability to manage approximately 20–30 projects of varying size, complexity, and duration.
Strong organization, follow-through, and personal accountability.
Ability to work independently and make practical field decisions.
Willingness and ability to travel regularly throughout Canada.
Valid driver’s licence and access to reliable transportation.
Legally entitled to work in Canada.

Assets

Any of the following would be beneficial but are not

mandatory:

Red Seal certification in a mechanical or electrical trade
Certified Engineering Technologist or Certified Technician designation
Commissioning certification or commissioning-agent experience
Mechanical or electrical engineering diploma or degree
Professional Engineer designation
Experience with a multidisciplinary consulting engineering firm
Experience with grocery, food-store, retail, refrigeration, warehouse, distribution, commercial, or industrial projects
Experience supporting national clients or multi-site construction programs
Familiarity with digital field-reporting or construction-management platforms

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This position offers the opportunity to apply practical construction knowledge within an established consulting engineering environment.

You will work on a varied national project portfolio, interact directly with contractors and trades, and play an important role in identifying issues before they affect project quality, performance, schedule, or closeout.

The role offers considerable independence and is well suited to someone who enjoys being in the field, solving practical problems, maintaining strong professional relationships, and taking ownership of their work.

Compensation

The expected base salary range is $100,000–$125,000 annually.

The successful candidate’s compensation will be determined based on relevant construction and inspection experience, technical knowledge, professional or trade designations, multidisciplinary capabilities, and ability to manage a national project portfolio.

Additional information regarding benefits, travel expenses, vacation, and other employment terms will be discussed during the recruitment process.

Application

Please apply with a current résumé outlining your mechanical, electrical, construction, commissioning, or inspection experience.
