About Secure Yourself IT Solutions

At Secure Yourself IT Solutions, we help organizations solve real technology problems. We provide IT consulting, contract staffing, and software solutions that support the way businesses work.

Our work brings together people, technology, and practical thinking. We focus on building software that is secure, reliable, and easy to maintain. We also help clients find the right technical talent for projects that need experience, care, and a steady hand.

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to support an upcoming Government of Canada project. This is a chance to put your skills to work on systems where quality, security, and reliability matter.

The Role: Build Software That Matters

We're looking for an experienced software engineer who knows how to turn complex requirements into working software. You'll help design, build, test, and maintain back-end services and APIs. You'll work with other developers, project teams, and stakeholders to solve problems, make sound technical decisions, and deliver work that meets the needs of the client.

The exact technology stack will depend on the project. We're interested in engineers with strong fundamentals who can adapt to the tools and frameworks the work calls for. Whether your background is in .NET, Java, Node.js, Python, or another modern development environment, what matters most is your ability to write good code, learn new systems, and get things done.

This is a contract role based in Ottawa, with a hybrid work arrangement that includes both on-site collaboration and remote work.

Please note: This position requires the ability to obtain a Government of Canada Secret security clearance. Candidates must meet the applicable security screening requirements.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Build and maintain software. Design and develop back-end services, APIs, and application components that are reliable, secure, and easy to support.
  • Solve problems that matter. Investigate bugs, troubleshoot system issues, and find practical solutions when things don't work as expected.
  • Write code you can stand behind. Follow sound engineering practices, write tests, review code, and help keep the codebase clean and maintainable.
  • Work as part of a team. Collaborate with developers, project managers, business analysts, and other stakeholders to turn requirements into clear technical plans.
  • Help shape technical decisions. Take part in design reviews, discuss trade-offs, and help choose approaches that fit the project's needs.
  • Keep security in mind. Apply secure coding practices and help protect applications, data, and services from common vulnerabilities.
  • Share what you know. Support other developers, offer useful feedback, and help the team improve how it builds and delivers software.
  • Make the work better over time. Contribute to documentation, automated testing, deployment practices, and improvements to the development process.
What We're Looking For

You don't need experience with every tool or framework. We want someone with a strong technical foundation, good judgment, and the ability to work through challenges without losing sight of the bigger picture.

You'll bring:

  • Several years of professional software development experience, ideally in a senior or similarly experienced role.
  • A solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and core software engineering principles.
  • Strong programming skills and experience building and maintaining complex applications.
  • Hands-on experience developing back-end services, web APIs, and integrations with databases or external systems.
  • A good grasp of object-oriented programming, software design, and writing code that's easy to test and maintain.
  • Experience with version control, code reviews, automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • An understanding of secure software development and common application security risks.
  • The ability to break down requirements, weigh technical options, and explain your decisions in plain language.
  • Clear communication skills and a willingness to work closely with both technical and non-technical teams.
  • The ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and take ownership of your work.

A degree or diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field is an asset. Equivalent hands-on experience is also valuable.

Experience That Would Be an Asset

Depending on the project's needs, experience in any of the following areas could be useful:

  • Modern back-end technologies such as .NET, Java, Node.js, Python, or similar platforms.
  • Front-end frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.
  • Relational or NoSQL databases, data modelling, and query optimization.
  • Cloud platforms, containers, and services built with a microservices architecture.
  • Infrastructure as code, automated deployments, and DevOps practices.
  • Enterprise systems, complex integrations, or applications with strict security and reliability requirements.
  • Agile development, technical documentation, and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

These are examples, not a fixed technology checklist. The final stack will depend on the project.

A Few Important Details
  • Location: Ottawa, Ontario
  • Work arrangement: Hybrid, with on-site and remote work
  • Employment type: Contract
  • Project: Upcoming Government of Canada engagement
  • Security requirement: Must be eligible to obtain a Government of Canada Secret security clearance
Interested?

If you're an experienced developer who cares about writing good software, solving hard problems, and doing work you can stand behind, we'd like to hear from you.

You don't need to know every framework on the market. You do need strong fundamentals, a thoughtful approach to engineering, and the ability to work well with others.

If that sounds like you, let's talk.
