As our Junior Capital Accountant, you will be responsible for focusing on capital projects and all associated financials, including variance analysis, reporting and all financial entries. The successful candidate will be a driven individual with strong communication and interpersonal skills, someone that can innovate, inspire, and collaborate. The Team

The Junior Capital Accountant will join a collaborative and supportive team that values effective communication and knowledge-sharing. The role involves working with stakeholders across various departments in an engaging environment where team members support one another and contribute to the organization’s overall success.

The work environment is dynamic and fast-paced, requiring adaptability and a proactive approach to handle complex financial tasks efficiently. This role provides a balance of routine financial activities and special projects, fostering both stability and continuous learning within a structured yet evolving setting.

The Junior Capital Accountant position is a full-time role based at our Calgary Brookfield office. It follows a Monday to Friday schedule, with a standard 40-hour work week.

A Day in The Life

The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

Work closely with Project Managers and Finance to support the tracking, analysis, and reporting of capital projects, including project status, and spend.
Maintain and prepare capital project reports and supporting schedules as required.
Review capital project reporting for accuracy, investigate discrepancies, and assist with resolving coding, budget, category, and project status issues.
Support the ongoing development and improvement of systems, processes, and reporting tools related to capital management and planning.
Ensure established Standard Operating Procedures are followed and identify opportunities to improve process accuracy and efficiency.
Prepare month-end capital accounting entries, including transfers from Assets Under Construction (AUC) to fixed assets when projects are placed into service.
Support the full project lifecycle from project setup through construction and close-out by gathering information from Project Managers on expected completion dates, outstanding invoices, project status, and other relevant updates.
Prepare and process fixed asset additions, disposals, and transfers, including related depreciation and gain or loss entries.
Work with the Mobile Assets group to review asset records and ensure asset disposals and transfers are appropriately processed through the Mobile Asset app.
Prepare the monthly PST working paper and self-assessment for applicable British Columbia and Saskatchewan capital projects, ensuring PST is appropriately recorded and remitted.
Review and process postings related to Engineering and Construction projects, including correcting budget, category, and project completion errors.
Provide coverage for the creation of new capital projects and coordination of related approval workflows.
Generate and maintain capital reporting through BI dashboards and other reporting tools.
Perform other accounting, reporting, and administrative responsibilities as required to support the Capital Accounting and Finance teams.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

The individual in this role will have:

Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field is considered an asset.
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues and recommend practical solutions.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results within tight deadlines.
Experience with Microsoft D365 and related reporting tools is considered an asset.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
