Original job description

For two decades, H2Safety has proudly led North America in emergency response management, Health Safety and Environment (HSE), and emergency software services. While our market leadership resides in Canada, our reach extends across the United States and worldwide.

H2Safety Services Inc., an SGS company, is a Calgary-based emergency management firm. We provide emergency response planning, hazard assessment and dispersion modelling, GIS, emergency management training, 24/7 incident support, Indigenous emergency management and the H2CommandCentre platform to energy and industrial clients across Canada.

Job Description

The Director of Training leads H2Safety’s Training team and is accountable for the training service line: its strategy, revenue, margin, delivery quality and growth. The Director sets the direction for H2Safety’s course and exercise offerings, including Incident Command System (ICS) training and programs built to client-specific requirements, manages the department budget and instructor capacity, and works with Sales and senior leadership to grow training revenue with existing and new clients. The role combines leadership of the function with regular personal delivery of courses and exercises. H2Safety’s business is broad, and we expect an experienced hire to take several months to become fully familiar with our services, clients and methodology.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

Experience in strategic planning, budgeting and program development, including responsibility for the financial performance of a department or service line.
Working knowledge of the Canadian requirements that drive client training and exercises, including AER Directive 071, BCER and CER requirements, CSA Z246.2 and CSA Z1600.
Experience with e-learning technologies, digital training platforms, and instructional design.
Experience leading, developing and scheduling instructors.
Experience facilitating training and exercises for senior client audiences, including executives and incident management teams.

Key Duties

Develop and execute a long-term training strategy aligned with H2Safety’s business objectives.
Personally deliver courses and facilitate exercises on a regular basis, including high-profile client engagements.
Own the financial performance of the training service line, including revenue, gross margin, pricing and the department budget.
Identify opportunities for new training programs, certifications, and industry partnerships.
Evaluate and implement digital and blended delivery options, including e-learning.
Ensure training and exercise programs meet the regulatory and standards requirements that apply to clients.
Maintain and expand relationships with clients, regulatory bodies, and industry organizations.
Develop customized training programs tailored to meet specific client needs, including ICS training.
Design, facilitate and evaluate tabletop, functional and full-scale exercises, including after-action reporting.
Work with Sales on training pursuits, proposals and pricing, and identify opportunities for H2Safety’s other services within training clients.
Coordinate with ERP Services, Indigenous Emergency Management and the H2CommandCentre team so that training aligns with the plans and systems H2Safety delivers to clients.
Represent H2Safety at conferences, industry events, and speaking engagements.
Lead and develop the training team, including instructor qualification, scheduling, utilization and performance management.
Oversee the quality assurance and continuous improvement of all training programs.
Define and report KPIs for the training service line, including revenue, gross margin, instructor utilization, participant evaluation results and repeat-client rate.

Qualifications

Required Education, Experience & Credentials

Bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management, Education, Business, or a related field (required); Master’s degree (asset).
10+ years of experience in emergency management, including at least 5 years leading training or exercise programs and managing staff.
Qualified to instruct Incident Command System courses under the ICS Canada curriculum (required).
Certified Emergency Manager (CEM), an adult education or training credential (e.g., PIDP, CTDP), or formal exercise design training (asset).
Experience designing, facilitating and evaluating tabletop, functional and full-scale exercises.
Experience growing a training business or service line, including pricing, proposals and client development, preferably with energy-sector or industrial clients.
