About the Job:

Reporting to the Chief Finance and Corporate Services Officer, the Director of Finance is responsible for strategic and operational leadership for the organization's financial management, planning, reporting, compliance, and fiscal sustainability. They ensure the integrity of financial systems, support organizational decision-making through accurate financial analysis, and maintain compliance with regulatory, funding, audit, and reporting requirements.

They are responsible for planning, organizing, and overseeing the Finance team through encouraging positive change/innovation. They ensure that strategic goals established by executives are translated into practical action and that relationships are maximized between employees and community partners.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategic Financial Leadership

Serve as a key advisor on financial strategy, risk management, budgeting, forecasting, and business planning
Lead the development and monitoring of organizational financial plans and long-term fiscal strategies
Support funding proposals, business cases, RFPs, and organizational growth initiatives

Financial Management and Reporting

Oversee the preparation of accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports
Monitor organizational cash flow and financial performance
Analyze financial results, identify variances, and provide recommendations to support informed decision-making
Present financial information to the Sr. Leadership Team, Program teams, Funders, and regulatory bodies

Budgeting and Forecasting

Lead the annual budgeting process and ongoing forecasting activities
Collaborate with operational leaders to develop program budgets and funding requests
Ensure alignment between program plans, budget forecasts, and organizational objectives

Compliance, Audit and Internal Controls

Ensure compliance with all regulatory, tax, charitable, and funder reporting requirements
Establish and maintain effective internal controls, financial policies, and accounting procedures
Lead the annual external audit process and coordinate year-end financial activities
Ensure timely submission of all statutory and funder reporting requirements

Financial Systems and Process Improvement

Maintain the integrity and effectiveness of financial systems and reporting tools
Oversee financial software administration, upgrades, testing, and reporting functionality
Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance financial processes, controls, and reporting

Leadership and Stakeholder Relations

Provide leadership, coaching, and development to the Finance team
Build strong relationships with auditors, funders, government ministries, financial institutions, and other external stakeholders
Support organizational committees and leadership initiatives related to financial stewardship and accountability
Other duties as required as per the reporting Manager

Qualifications:

Post-Secondary education in Finance, Accounting, or a related field required
5+ years Supervising and/or Managing employees
5-10 years’ experience in a Financial Accounting, Planning, and Analysis role
CPA or CFA designation preferred
Demonstrated experience in not-for-profit, healthcare, community services, government-funded, or broader public sector environment is preferred
Experience managing external audits, government reporting requirements, charitable reporting obligations, and funder accountability frameworks.
Advanced knowledge of accounting and financial reporting systems, including ERP platforms and reporting tools (e.g., Dynamics GP, Power BI, Microsoft Excel).
Demonstrated leadership experience coaching, developing, and mentoring finance staff.
High degree of integrity, confidentiality, accountability, and professional judgment.
Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and invisible dimensions of diversity
Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated ability to work without direct supervision in a team environment
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and financial data analytics platforms.
A vehicle, valid driver’s license, and adequate insurance coverage

Reporting Function:

The Director of Finance reports directly to the Chief Finance and Corporate Services Officer. They are responsible for overseeing and managing the Finance team and have the authority to hire/fire/discipline and manage accordingly. They work with both internal and external partners and interact with all levels within the organization. They are a support system, resource, and advocator for the team and organization.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Day shifts (8:30am - 4:30pm | Monday – Friday) with the ability to work excess/overtime hours where required
Able to work well with internal and external clients
Able to drive, walk (site locations) regularly
Able to sit for prolonged periods of time
Able to answer and communicate telephone calls and general computer use
Computer screen use (multiple screens if applicable) for prolonged periods of time
Able to lift up to 20lbs (product, documents, etc.)
Travel by vehicle to community sites for client support as required
