About the Job

Reporting to the Manager of Capital Housing, the Maintenance Worker will primarily be responsible for unit turnovers, completing work orders, cleaning, repairing, inspecting, and supporting basic fire safety within properties at SHIP. Work could include painting, plastering, minor carpentry, and/or minor electrical/plumbing work.

They will ensure that the SHIP properties are tidy and functional and proactively identify challenges to ensure smooth business operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Support all maintenance obligations and requests within SHIP properties
Update Fire Logs as required and ensure all Fire Safety standards are in compliance
Inspect units annually, during move in/out of tenants, for pests, and for safety concerns
Conduct general repairs within the interior and exterior of the building (electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and/or carpentry in nature)Maintain the
property quality by painting, plastering, and repairing the property and units as necessary
Maintain regular cleaning schedules and maintenance reports
Assist with garbage collection pickup and removal
Perform heavy duty cleaning (shampooing carpets, waxing floors, etc.)
Maintain and restock cleaning supplies
Update the maintenance software program (Arcori) as required
Interact with tenants in a positive manner and update the Client Record Management System (CRMS)
Coordinate with external vendors regarding building maintenance and proactively identify maintenance challenges and/or scope of work that may be required
Comply with Occupational Health & Safety legislation
Complete assigned tasks with professionalism and minimal supervision
Perform additional duties as required/delegated by Management

Qualifications

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent experience
2+ years’ experience in general facility maintenance work
Familiarity with electrical hand tools (power drills, sanders, saws, etc.)
Knowledge of WHMIS, standard cleaning procedures, and products
Working from heights certification is preferrable
Knowledge of Fire Codes, Building Codes, and Safety Standards
Able to meet deadlines and perform multiple tasks (multitasking)
Ability to work with minimal direction or supervision
Highly flexible, with solid interpersonal skills that allow one to workeffectively in a diverse working environment
Sound judgment, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Clear and concise oral and written communication skills
Knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook)
A valid G driver's license

Reporting Function

The Maintenance Worker will report directly to the Manager of Capital Housing or equivalent. They will not have any Supervisory responsibility.

They will work with both internal and external customers and will interact with all levels within the organization.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Hours are generally Monday – Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm with the ability to work excess/overtime and participate in the after hours on call rotation
Able to sit/stand for prolonged periods of time
Ability to safely and repeatedly climb and descend stairs and ladders, and to bend, kneel, and crouch, while working in confined or restricted spaces, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Able to communicate via telephone and general computer use
Able to lift and operate equipment up to 50lbs (tools, supplies, office documents, etc.
Travel by SHIP vehicle when available to building/tenant sites for client support as required. Travel by use of their personal vehicle may be required at times.
Manual dexterity to use hand and power tools
Work may be performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
May involve exposure to dust, noise, cleaning chemicals, and mechanical equipment
On-call, evening, or weekend work is required on a rotational basis
Staff may be required to administer naloxone in response to suspected opioid overdoses, and must complete appropriate training to recognize overdose symptoms, safely administer naloxone via nasal spray or injection, and follow emergency protocols including contacting emergency services. Staff receive training within the first eight weeks of employment

Driving Requirement

The position requires regular travel between multiple sites and all SHIP regions (Peel, Dufferin) to perform essential maintenance duties, including responding to urgent service requests and transporting tools and materials. A valid Class G driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record are required. Accommodation will be considered in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code.
