Original job description

About The Role

Shopify's Technical Program Managers (TPM) manage large-scale missions and programs to build the best product for our merchants, enabling entrepreneurship and creating new value for the world. TPMs drive execution, capability and impact across the organization by keeping thousands of people focused, and moving as fast as possible so Shopify can achieve the impact of giants with the speed of a startup. We believe in assessing team fit and leveling throughout our interview process to ensure the best match for both the candidate and our teams.

About Shopify

Opportunity is not evenly distributed. Shopify puts independence within reach for anyone with a dream to start a business. Since 2006, we’ve grown to 10,000 employees and generated over $500 billion in sales for millions of merchants in 175 countries. This is life-defining work that directly impacts people’s lives as much as it transforms your own. This is putting the power of the few in the hands of the many, is a future with more voices rather than fewer, and is creating more choices instead of an elite option.

About You

Moving at our pace brings a lot of change, complexity, and ambiguity - and a little bit of chaos. Shopifolk thrive on that and are comfortable being uncomfortable. That means Shopify is not the right place for everyone. Before you apply, consider if you can:

Care deeply about what you do and about making commerce better for everyone
Excel by seeking professional and personal hypergrowth
Keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter)
Be resilient and resourceful in face of ambiguity and thrive on (rather than endure) change
Bring critical thought and opinion - and embrace differences and disagreement to get shit done and move forward
Work AI-first for your daily work

About The Role

As a Sr. Staff Technical Program Manager (TPM), you’ll lead company-wide programs that shape how Shopify works with data, machine learning, and AI. Alongside engineers, product managers, scientists, and AI agents, you’ll drive the development and adoption of advanced data processing systems. You’ll help determine which tools we build, buy, and scale, strengthen data governance, and improve the efficiency and value of our data investments.

You’ll work with one of the world’s leading commerce datasets at a company betting its future on AI. Your work will enable thousands of Shopify employees to move faster and build better products for millions of merchants across the globe.

Qualifications

Extensive experience in engineering, product/technical program management, data analysis, or product development
A proven track record and passion for managing large, complex technical programs with measurable outcomes
Led cross-organizational initiatives with a founder's mindset
A commitment to understanding technical architecture and feasibility of tech solutions to drive software development deliverables and solutions
Successfully driven complex negotiations with diverse stakeholders to manage interdependent priorities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills to provide clear visibility into program progress for audiences at all levels
Demonstrated leadership abilities to influence stakeholders, gain buy-in, and unite teams to drive progress forward
Self-driven and proactive approach to navigate ambiguity and complexity within a fast paced environment to bring clarity to stakeholders
Expertise managing with highly effective program management tools and cadences
Ability to partner as a thought leader with leadership to shape strategy, define success metrics, and build alignment across organizations
Familiarity with leveraging AI tools and IDEs (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini etc.)

Still interested? Great! To match you with your ideal role, we’ll take the time to get to know you and the skills you bring to the table. If you’re applying to a specific role, we’ll respond within 10 business days. If we don’t have an immediate opening, don’t worry! We’ll give you an update and keep you in mind for future roles. Just do us a favor and try not to submit more than one or two applications. Only submit additional applications if you really match the criteria for multiple roles.
