About the role: Backend & AI Engineer
We are seeking a Backend & AI Engineer, for Siemens Digital Industries Operations Software to help build and scale our Agentic AI platform. The role focuses on solid backend engineering, AI/ML engineering, pipeline development, data processing, and production readiness. You will help build industrial-grade AI agent systems that augment and automate real business workflows in industrial operations. Working within an established architecture and alongside senior engineers, you will develop and integrate agentic capabilities that are trustworthy, scalable, and measurable - contributing to how agentic systems are built across the organization.

As part of Siemens Operations Software (OPS-SW), the Technology, Data Fabric & Agentic AI organization provides the technology foundation that enables the next generation of industrial software. Its portfolio includes AI Production & Engineering Systems, Data Fabric, Agentic AI frameworks, connectivity platforms, semantic data models, cloud-native architectures, and industrial AI services that power autonomous, scalable, and intelligent operations across the OPS-SW portfolio.
What will you do?
- Develop scalable backend services using Python
- Contribute to AI pipelines including RAG configuration, evaluation, and quality validation
- Build and maintain data ingestion, preprocessing, and transformation pipelines
- Implement APIs for agent orchestration, data services, and AI interaction layers
- Support platform hardening including performance improvements, monitoring, and observability
- Collaborate with DevOps teams on CI/CD, deployment automation, and cloud infrastructure
- Help ensure platform reliability, uptime, and scalability using DevOps and SRE best practices
- Contribute to compute, storage, and inference cost optimization while maintaining performance and quality
- Follow governance, access control, and compliance processes across AI workloads
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, data science, engineering, and security to deliver AI features and integrations
- Troubleshoot production issues and help continuously improve the platform's architecture and performance
- The role would evolve in scope as the product and team evolves
What you will bring:
- Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field.
- Over 2 years of backend development in the AI space
- Solid experience with Python backend development and familiarity with microservices architecture
- Working knowledge of LLMs, RAG pipelines, and prompt engineering
- Exposure to agent application frameworks
- Hands-on experience with data pipelines; familiarity with vector databases and/or knowledge graphs
- Experience with a major cloud platform (Azure preferred; Azure OpenAI a plus)
- Working knowledge of containerization and CI/CD
- Understanding of distributed systems and cloud-native or on-prem deployment (Docker, Kubernetes)
What sets you apart:
- Exposure to multi-agent systems or orchestration frameworks
- Familiarity with AI observability tools (e.g., Langfuse)
- Awareness of enterprise AI governance, performance tuning, and security practices
- Experience in regulated industries or enterprise platforms
- Exposure to the NVIDIA AI stack (NeMo, NIM, Triton, NeMo Guardrails)
- Mendix or comparable low-code integration experience
- Industrial / OT background - OPC-UA, MQTT, MES, historians, or manufacturing data
- Enterprise integration exposure (SAP, data fabric / streaming - Kafka)
- Open-source contributions or published work in the agentic-AI / LLM space
Salary is commensurate with experience, and ranges between $ 90,000 CAD - $140,000 CAD, excluding bonus and benefits. In addition to base salary, this role includes eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus of 10% of base salary, based on Company performance metrics.
