What will you do?
Are you a Building Automation specialist with deep expertise in BAS programming, commissioning, and controls who is ready to lead larger projects? We are looking for a
Technical Project Manager - Building Automation Systems (BAS) who can combine hands-on technical leadership with project and financial management. In this role, you will serve as both the technical authority and project leader, ensuring complex building automation systems are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards within a security-sensitive airport environment requiring Transport Canada Security Clearance.
In this unique hybrid role, you will be the primary driver of project success. You won't just be managing schedules and budgets from a desk, you will be on-site, leading a technical team, supporting clients with energy-saving initiatives, and ensuring that our DDC systems are programmed and commissioned to the highest standards. You are the technical heartbeat of the project and the financial steward of its success.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Technical Leadership & Field Execution
- Hands-on Technical Support: Perform and oversee system start-ups, programming, and troubleshooting for complex BAS installations.
- System Excellence: Manage and oversee graphics creation, database management, and final critical adjustments for system calibration.
- Commissioning: Lead the final walk-throughs and ensure all commissioning reports and job closeout documentation (PMSBT Acceptance process) are completed accurately.
- Client Advisory: Act as a technical consultant for clients, identifying opportunities for automation initiatives, energy savings, and DDC capability expansion.
Project & Financial Management
- Project Lifecycle: Review contract documents to schedule deliverables, estimate costs, and manage the project from start-up through to warranty.
- Budget Oversight: Manage project revenue forecasting, gross margins, and material budgets to achieve monthly and annual business plans.
- Resource Management: Determine staffing and tool needs, providing direction to subcontractors and guidance to on-site contractors.
- Safety & Compliance: Oversee all on-site and off-site construction to monitor compliance with building and safety regulations.
Sales & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Customer Liaison: Act as the main point of contact for project delivery, fostering strong relationships and mitigating issues.
- Sales Support: Provide technical and operational expertise to sales teams, helping define scope and pricing for new project opportunities.
- Training: Conduct development classes for customers on-site to ensure they are proficient in their new systems.
Location: Primarily supporting projects in the Calgary Airport Authority, Calgary Alberta.
What will you need to succeed?
Education:
- B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
- A 2-year Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Mechatronics, Electronics, or Instrumentation
Experience:
- 5+ years of direct hands-on experience working with Building Automation Systems (BAS); less experience will also be considered.
- 3–5 years operational experience in Project Management and/or Project Development experience within the Building Automation and/or Construction industry.
Certification(s):
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI).
Technical Knowledge & Skills:
- Strong knowledge of building electrical and mechanical systems.
- BAS programming.
- Commissioning and start-ups.
- Communication Protocols: BACnet, Modbus, TCP/IP, MSTP
- Good knowledge of building systems and relevant standards.
- Proven diagnostic skills; able to systematically identify and resolve technical problems
- Self-motivated and calm under pressure; willing to communicate and work though complex problems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Project or equivalent project management software.
- Financial acumen includes costing, budgeting, forecasting, and project financial management.
Core Competencies:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; strong presentation skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with contractors, consultants, customers, and executive stakeholders.
- Strong planning, organizational, and stakeholder management skills.
Additional Requirements:
- A valid and unrestricted G/Class 5 driver’s licence is required to participate in the Siemens Fleet Program for travel to customer sites within assigned region(s).
- Transport Canada Security Clearance and/or ability to successfully obtain and maintain a Transport Canada Restricted Area Identity Card (RAIC) and/or is a essential.
Asset(s):
- Previous experience as a Field Technician in the Building Automation domain.
- Professional designations such as P.Eng., LEED, CEM, CFAA, Construction Professional (CP) or other relevant industry certifications.
NOTE - This is not an IT project management role or general project management role. This is a specialized role requiring expertise in Building Automation / Building Automation Systems, building codes, electrical / mechanical is essential to service our commercial clients.
