Original job description
Simply Silicon builds vertically integrated accelerated computing infrastructure for modern enterprises. We believe high-density computing works best when the facility and the workload are designed together. We call this approach application-specific data centers. It brings electrical and mechanical design, state-of-the-art cooling, heat reuse, and production inference into the same picture.
We’re hiring a Facilities Engineer to own the design and delivery of the physical infrastructure at our sites. This is a hands-on role. You should be comfortable working through electrical single-line diagrams and mechanical P&IDs, providing clear technical direction to engineering partners and internal stakeholders, and keeping multiple sites moving at once.
What you’ll do
- Develop facility designs. Create and maintain the basis of design for power/electrical, cooling, and heat recovery infrastructure. Turn compute requirements into equipment loads, capacity plans, layouts, and clear scopes for engineering partners.
- Work across electrical and mechanical systems. Evaluate power distribution, transformers, switchgear, UPS capacity, and metering alongside technical cooling systems, CDUs, pumps, heat rejection, and heat-recovery interfaces.
- Contribute directly to engineering. Prepare calculations, equipment comparisons, technical scopes, and design sketches. Review drawings and vendor submittals, and resolve gaps.
- Lead external partners. Coordinate consulting engineers, equipment suppliers, contractors, and site stakeholders. Set clear ownership for deliverables, challenge assumptions, and bring design alignment across disciplines.
- Help deliver multiple builds. Track design decisions, procurement dependencies, construction milestones, site readiness, and commissioning. Raise technical and schedule risks early, with a practical plan to address them.
- Plan for expansion. Design phased growth around available power, cooling flow, equipment access, and operational resilience.
- Monitor facility health. Own visibility into critical systems, including RTU, cooling, and power health, and participate in on-call support for facility issues.
What you bring
- Systems-level engineering judgment, with the curiosity to rethink how components work together instead of repeating established designs.
- Strong working knowledge of electrical and mechanical infrastructure, including fluid flow and heat transfer, with depth in at least one discipline and the ability to work across disciplines.
- The ability to anticipate and respond to sudden changes in equipment availability and lead times, developing alternatives that preserve system performance.
- Experience designing or delivering data centers or similarly demanding critical facilities.
- The judgment to turn incomplete inputs into a documented design basis, assess vendor proposals against it, and bring in specialist expertise when needed.
- A Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation is an asset. We’re particularly interested in candidates who have balanced project leadership with their own technical design work.
Location and how we work
The role is based in Calgary, Alberta. Regular onsite work will be a part of the job to support design, construction, commissioning, and operations. We can support relocation if needed.
Outside of onsite work, you’re free to work from our office or your home. We focus on results. Because this role includes monitoring critical facility systems, it also carries on-call responsibilities.
What we offer
Competitive cash compensation, benefits, and equity compensation commensurate with experience.
How to apply
To submit an application, fill out the following email body and send it to jobs@gosimply.ai with your resume attached as a PDF or DOCX.
Subject: [Facilities Engineer] First Name Last Name
<500 words max. Describe an engineering project where you had to learn quickly and use first-principles thinking to design or improve a system under significant constraints and time pressure. What did you need to learn, which assumptions did you challenge, and how did that shape your approach? Be specific about your contribution, the trade-offs you made, and the outcome.
<200 words max. Describe why you feel this opportunity is so important that you would leave your current employer to be a part of it.
More about this job
Responsibilities
Develop and maintain facility designs for electrical power, cooling, and heat recovery, translating computing requirements into equipment loads, capacity plans, layouts, and engineering scopes. Coordinate partners and multiple site builds through design, procurement, construction, commissioning, expansion planning, and ongoing monitoring of critical systems.
Requirements
Candidates should have experience designing or delivering data centers or similarly demanding critical facilities, strong knowledge of electrical and mechanical infrastructure, and depth in at least one discipline. They should be able to develop documented design bases from incomplete inputs, assess vendor proposals, adapt to equipment and schedule constraints, and balance project leadership with hands-on technical design; a P.Eng. designation is an asset.
