Original job description

Are you aiming to expand your skills and critical thinking? As a Registered Practical Nurse, General Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, you will join the 10 North unit, gaining exposure to acute and complex patient scenarios, working to your full scope and collaborating with a welcoming team. We are committed to providing you with a comprehensive orientation and ongoing support to ensure you are successful in this next step of your career. You will have access to mentoring from seasoned professionals, a dedicated Clinical Nurse Specialist and support for professional growth opportunities such as attending conferences, NICHE certification and being involved in unit and organization-wide committees.

Is this you?
You excel in the fast-paced environment of a General Medicine unit where adaptability and good communication are paramount. Your ability to quickly prioritize and address patient needs is highly valued in a unit that sees a high volume of admissions from the Emergency Department and the ICU. Thriving under pressure, you ensure patients receive meticulous and timely care.

You are highly empathetic and able to build rapport with your colleagues, patients, and their families. Your ability to understand the perspective of others is key in developing and implementing effective care plans and being able to manage crucial situations with the team.

You seek a workplace that not only recognizes your dedication to quality patient care but also actively encourages your professional growth. Holding Exemplary Standing from Accreditation Canada, Mount Sinai is the first and only hospital in Canada to receive Magnet® recognition for nursing excellence and patient care. Our unit processes and structures align with this and allow you to have formal and informal leadership opportunities, have access to forums where your ideas are heard, and participate in quality improvement projects to enhance the care that we provide.

About this team:

We are a 28-bed general internal medicine unit. Benefit from manageable nurse-to-patient ratios: 4 patients per nurse during the day and 5-6 patients at night.  Our patients are typically admitted with diverse and complex medical needs, including pneumonia, congestive heart failure, delirium, infection, cancer, and other acute and chronic illnesses.

Our patients are often socially, functionally and medically complex which offers nurses unique opportunities to develop specialized expertise in respiratory medicine, oncology, palliative care, pain management, wound care, and geriatrics. With Canada's aging population, these future-ready skills are highly transferable and valuable throughout the health care system.

In this role you will:

  • Provide direct patient and family centered care for general internal medicine patients
  • Complete physical assessments on patients
  • Administer medications and provide any necessary care (wound care, IV insertion and management, monitoring drains, prepare patients for procedures, etc.)
  • Attend nursing rounds and participate in patient/family meetings
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, including doctors, pharmacists, social workers, clinical nurse specialists, etc.
  • Apply a broad range of nursing skills including (but not exclusive to) CADD pumps, nephrostomy tubes, complex wounds, central lines, enteral feeding tubes, TPN, CIWA monitoring, managing a Code Blue, and chemotherapy
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as required

Job Requirements:
Mandatory

  • Currently registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Graduate of a CNO-approved Practical Nursing (PN) program. Equivalent combined education and experience will be considered
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)

Preferred

  • 2 years of experience in an acute care clinical environment

Skills and Knowledge

  • Excellent health and clinical assessment skills
  • Demonstrated ability in providing quality patient-focused care and addressing the fundamental care needs of patients and their families
  • Proven ability to make sound professional judgements and practice decisions, and demonstrate effective time-management and organizational skills in a fast-paced work environment
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent oral, written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in interprofessional teams
