Job Title: Superintendent, Electrical

Reporting directly to the Site Maintenance Manager, the Superintendent, Electrical is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Skeena Resources’ electrical maintenance, reliability, and power systems programs across the Eskay Creek Project. The role provides leadership in electrical asset management, protection and control systems, condition monitoring, and power supply contingency planning to ensure safe, reliable, and resilient site electrical infrastructure.

Working closely with the Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering teams, contractors, and utility providers, the Superintendent embeds practical and disciplined electrical maintenance practices into daily work. The role plans and directs preventive and predictive maintenance, verifies that protection and control systems are correctly tested and coordinated, manages critical spares and contingency plans for major electrical equipment, and leads the site’s response to power supply disruptions to minimize downtime and safeguard personnel and assets.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

Preventive and Predictive Electrical Maintenance

Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the site’s preventive and predictive electrical maintenance program for all electrical assets.
Develop and maintain electrical maintenance standards, procedures, inspection checklists, and work instructions aligned with manufacturer recommendations and industry best practice.
Partner with Operations, Engineering, and Reliability teams to integrate electrical maintenance requirements into planning, shutdown scheduling, and daily work execution.
Establish and manage maintenance plans and PM strategies for transformers, switchgear, motor control centres (MCCs), protection relays, and associated auxiliary systems.
Evaluate program effectiveness through equipment performance data, failure trends, audits, and maintenance of KPIs, and recommend targeted improvements.
Identify systemic reliability gaps and lead practical improvement initiatives that reduce unplanned electrical downtime and extend asset life.

Power Distribution, Protection, and Control Systems

Oversee the operation, maintenance, and reliability of transformers, switchgear, motor control centres, and associated protection and control systems across the site.
Lead the electrical protection program, including relay testing, protection coordination studies, and setting reviews to ensure selective and reliable fault clearing.
Coordinate with Engineering and specialist contractors on protection setting changes, arc flash studies, and coordination study updates as the electrical system evolves.
Ensure protection and control systems are tested, calibrated, and documented in accordance with a defined testing schedule and applicable standards.
Maintain accurate single-line diagrams, protection setting records, and equipment nameplate and asset data for all major electrical infrastructure.

Electrical Condition Monitoring and Predictive Diagnostics

Lead the site’s electrical condition monitoring program, including infrared (IR) thermal scanning, partial discharge testing, oil analysis, and other predictive diagnostic techniques.
Establish inspection of frequencies and acceptance criteria for condition monitoring activities and ensure findings are tracked, prioritized, and closed out.
Use condition monitoring data and trending to identify degrading equipment, prioritize maintenance and capital work, and reduce the risk of unplanned failures.
Coordinate specialist testing services, including partial discharge surveys, oil sampling, and thermographic surveys, and ensure timely reporting and follow-up action.

Critical Spares, Contingency Planning, and Power Supply Resilience

Identify, maintain, and manage an inventory of critical electrical spares and long lead-time equipment, including transformers, switchgear components, and protection relays, to minimize downtime risk.
Develop and maintain contingency plans for failure of main transformers, switchgear, and other critical electrical infrastructure, including restoration strategies and work sequencing.
Identify single points of failure across the site’s electrical system and lead initiatives to mitigate risk through redundancy, spares strategy, or design improvements.
Support planning for power supply redundancy and alternate feed arrangements to maintain continuity of critical site operations.
Maintain and test restoration procedures and coordinate periodic contingency exercises with Operations and Engineering.

Emergency and Standby Power Systems

Oversee the maintenance, testing, and readiness of emergency and standby generation systems to ensure reliable backup power for critical loads.
Manage UPS systems, DC systems, and battery backup infrastructure supporting protection, control, and other critical site systems, including routine testing and battery health monitoring.
Ensure standby and backup power systems are tested on a defined schedule, and that test results, deficiencies, and corrective actions are tracked to closure.
Coordinate load transfer testing and automatic transfer switch verification to confirm seamless changeover during a loss of primary power.

Utility Reliability and Outage Response

Monitor site utility power reliability and maintain working relationships with the utility provider to support outage planning, notification, and response.
Lead the site’s response to unplanned power outages, coordinating restoration priorities, safety requirements, and communication with operational leadership.
Develop and maintain outage response plans, including load shedding priorities, restart sequencing, and equipment protection procedures during and after outages.
Conduct post-outage reviews to capture lessons learned and identify improvements to outage response planning and system resilience.

Commissioning, Testing, and Electrical Condition Assurance

Lead or support commissioning and pre-commissioning testing of new and modified electrical infrastructure, ensuring baseline condition data is captured prior to energization.
Establish baseline electrical condition data, including IR baselines, relay settings, and insulation resistance readings, for new and existing assets to support future condition monitoring and trending.
Review commissioning test results, protection settings, and as-built documentation for accuracy prior to equipment handover.
Support factory and site acceptance testing for major electrical equipment procurement.

Leadership, Compliance, and Team Development

Supervise, coach, and develop assigned Electrical Leads, Electricians, and other designated personnel.
Support compliance with applicable electrical codes, including the Canadian Electrical Code, the BC Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines, and Skeena Resources standards.
Plan and manage electrical maintenance budgets, contractor scopes, and resourcing to meet site operational and reliability requirements.
Support electrical safety programs, including arc flash risk assessment, lockout and isolation procedures, and electrical safe work practices.
Participate in investigations related to electrical equipment failures or electrical safety events and support corrective action implementation.

Additional Responsibilities

All other duties as reasonably assigned.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a practical and reliability-focused electrical leader with demonstrated experience maintaining and troubleshooting medium- and low-voltage power distribution systems in mining, industrial, or heavy industry settings. They are equally comfortable in developing maintenance programs, interpreting protection and relay settings, leading contingency planning for critical electrical infrastructure, and directing the site’s response during a power outage.

Education / Qualifications:

Certificate, diploma, or degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
Journeyman Electrician certification (Red Seal or provincial equivalent) is considered a strong asset.
Membership or eligibility for registration with a recognized professional or trades body is considered an asset.
Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence.

Experience / Skills:

Minimum ten years of progressive, directly related electrical maintenance experience, preferably in mining, heavy industry, or large industrial processing operations.
Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and managing preventive and predictive electrical maintenance programs.
Strong working knowledge of transformers, switchgear, motor control centers, and low- and medium-voltage protection systems.
Experience with relay testing, protection coordination studies, and setting reviews for industrial power systems.
Experience with electrical condition monitoring techniques, including IR thermography, partial discharge testing, and oil analysis.
Experience managing critical spares strategies and contingency planning for major electrical equipment and long lead-time components.
Experience with power supply redundancy, alternate feed arrangements, and single point of failure risk mitigation.
Experience maintaining emergency and standby generation, UPS, DC systems, and battery backup infrastructure.
Experience leading or supporting electrical commissioning, testing, and baseline condition assessments for new or modified infrastructure.
Working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code, the BC Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines, and applicable electrical safety standards.
Strong understanding of arc flash risk assessment, lockout and isolation, and electrical safe work practices.
Ability to lead a team, coach tradespeople, and manage contractor performance across multiple priorities.
Excellent written, verbal, and report-writing skills, with strong attention to detail.
Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office. Experience with CMMS platforms and electrical monitoring or SCADA systems is preferred.
Demonstrated capability working respectfully with Indigenous governments and communities, including awareness of history, protocols, values, and governance, is considered an asset.
Detail oriented with excessive attention to detail.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Work Location & Conditions

This is a site-based camp job at Eskay Creek Mine site. This position involves working at a remote mine site on a 15 days on/13 days off rotation.

The Eskay Creek Revitalization Project is located within the Coast Mountains of Northwestern British Columbia and Tahltan Territory. Ground transportation will be provided from local communities to the Eskay Creek Site facilities. For those applicants located elsewhere in western Canada, flight transportation from major urban centers will be provided to the Terrace or Smithers airports, from which shuttles will provide transportation to the Eskay Creek Camp facilities. Travel time and expenses are subject to Skeena’s Travel Policy.

There will be exposure to extreme temperatures in all seasons including working outdoors in snow, mud, ice, and water conditions, walking to and from different locations on uneven ground, prolonged periods of standing and physically handling/lifting/moving heavy objects.

Compensation

The expected salary range for this position is CAD $150 000 – CAD $180 000, in line with the competitive job market for such roles carried out in British Columbia. Salary ranges are guidelines and any job offer received by a candidate will be determined on a number of factors such as relevant education, training, and/or experience.
