Job Description:
Sky Sight Inc. is seeking a full-time, permanent Civil / Structural Engineer, P.Eng. to help establish in-house engineering for small-building/small-site projects.
This hands-on role requires an Ontario-licensed Professional Engineer with civil/site and structural experience. Responsibilities include design, calculations, drawings, reports, field review, municipal coordination, and technical delivery within their competence.
Projects include residential, commercial, light-industrial, and mixed-use work: custom homes, additions, renovations, rebuilds, infill, smaller commercial, and other small-building/small-site assignments.
The successful candidate will act as Designated Professional Engineer for obtaining/maintaining the firm’s PEO Certificate of Authorization, including supervision, review, and sealing of applicable engineering work.
The engineer will work with Sky Sight’s design/technical staff and may use building measurement, LiDAR, drone mapping, GNSS, point-cloud, and other reality-capture capabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Professional Engineering:
- Act as Designated Professional Engineer for PEO Certificate of Authorization purposes and support compliance with applicable PEO requirements/legislation.
- Prepare, review, coordinate, and seal engineering drawings, calculations, reports, letters, details, and deliverables.
- Exercise professional responsibility within their competence; review work for accuracy, completeness, and code, standard, and municipal compliance.
- Identify when specialized expertise/additional consultants are required.
Civil / Site Engineering:
- Prepare, review, coordinate, and seal grading/drainage plans for residential, commercial, mixed-use, infill, renovation, rebuild, and other small-site work.
- Use Autodesk Civil 3D/AutoCAD for grading plans, surfaces, drainage layouts, servicing drawings, profiles, details, and civil documentation.
- Undertake lot grading, drainage, basic stormwater management, erosion/sediment control, and site servicing for smaller developments.
- Prepare/review stormwater briefs, functional servicing reports, drainage calculations, erosion/sediment control documentation, and municipal submissions.
- Review topographic surveys, LiDAR, aerial mapping, GNSS, point clouds, and other existing-condition data for civil design.
- Coordinate with Ontario Land Surveyors for required legal boundary, topographic, reference plan, or other survey information.
- Coordinate with municipal engineering departments and respond to permit, zoning clearance, Committee of Adjustment, site plan, and other approval comments.
- Provide technical input on grading, drainage, servicing, access, site constraints, and constructibility.
Structural Engineering:
- Provide structural design/review for Part 9 and smaller Part 3 projects.
- Design, review, specify, and seal common small-building elements: beams, lintels, posts, footings, foundations, retaining walls, floor/roof framing, structural openings, framing modifications, additions, and renovations.
- Undertake structural engineering in common wood, steel, masonry, and concrete construction.
- Prepare calculations, details, notes, markups, sketches, letters, and review comments; review/seal structural permit-package portions where required.
- Design/review foundations, underpinning, retaining walls, framing alterations, and other small-building structural conditions.
- Review existing structural conditions and recommend solutions for renovations, additions, alterations, repairs, and modifications.
- Conduct visual building-condition reviews and engineering opinion letters where required.
Construction, Field Review & Coordination:
- Conduct site visits and field/general reviews for civil/structural scopes; review construction for general design conformance.
- Respond to RFIs, contractor inquiries, municipal comments, field changes, and construction issues; assess engineering impacts.
- Prepare general/construction review letters, site review documentation, and engineering opinion letters.
- Coordinate with clients, contractors, municipalities, consultants, and internal staff through design/construction.
- Provide technical input on structure, grading, drainage, servicing, permit comments, existing conditions, and constructibility.
Practice Development:
- Review scopes; assist with technical assumptions, exclusions, anticipated effort, risks, and fee estimates.
- Help establish drawing standards/details, calculation templates, checklists, QA/QC procedures, and internal review workflows.
- Integrate engineering work with Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Revit, ReCap, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and related workflows.
- Support future training/supervision of EITs, technologists, designers, or drafting staff as workload grows.
- Contribute to in-house engineering development.
Requirements:
- P.Eng. licensed in Ontario and in good standing with PEO; able/willing to act as Designated Professional Engineer for Certificate of Authorization purposes.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related engineering discipline.
- Approximately 5+ years’ relevant Ontario engineering experience.
- Practical civil/site and small-building structural experience, including preparing, reviewing, and sealing drawings, calculations, reports, letters, and professional deliverables.
- Ability to work independently at appropriate project scale/complexity, with hands-on production of drawings, calculations, markups, reports, and correspondence.
- Practical working knowledge of Autodesk Civil 3D and AutoCAD.
- Experience in grading, drainage, stormwater management, erosion/sediment control, site servicing, and municipal requirements for smaller developments.
- Structural experience with Part 9 and smaller Part 3 projects, including design/review/sealing of common small-building structural elements/systems.
- Working knowledge of OBC Parts 3, 4, 9, and 11.
- Familiarity with applicable CSA structural standards and common wood, steel, concrete, and masonry construction.
- Experience with additions, renovations, alterations, existing buildings, and small-site development.
- Experience responding to municipal engineering, building permit, zoning, Committee of Adjustment, and/or site plan comments.
- Experience with site visits, field/general reviews, and construction-phase engineering.
- Ability to coordinate with architectural/BCIN designers, municipal staff, contractors, clients, OLSs, geotechnical and other consultants.
- Strong technical judgment, communication, organization, problem-solving, and technical writing skills.
- Valid Ontario G-class driver’s licence; able to conduct site visits throughout Southern Ontario.

- Building condition assessments, existing-building reviews, technical due diligence, or engineering opinion letters.
- Proposal preparation, fee estimates, technical assumptions/exclusions, and project risk review.
- Engineering standards, templates, QA/QC procedures, or technical workflow development.
- Supervising/mentoring EITs, technologists, designers, or junior technical staff.

Compensation & Benefits:

Location / Work Arrangement:
Hybrid role based at our Burlington office: Unit 11, 3325 Harvester Road, Burlington, Ontario
Regular in-office attendance is required for coordination, team meetings, drawing/technical reviews, and collaboration.
Some remote-work flexibility may be available depending on project requirements, workload, meetings, and site obligations.
As engineering capabilities develop, the role may expand into technical leadership, staff supervision, and practice development.
