SLMCON is seeking a System Architect to translate complex warehouse operational needs into scalable, secure, and maintainable technology solutions. Working with clients and delivery teams, this role defines the target solution architecture, guides design decisions, and provides technical leadership through implementation and adoption of warehouse management system solutions.
The ideal candidate combines deep warehouse and logistics knowledge with strong application architecture, integration, data, security, and communication skills. They are comfortable advising business and technology leaders, evaluating solution trade-offs, establishing technical standards, guiding analysts and developers, and maintaining architectural integrity across complex client implementations.
Role Overview
The System Architect is responsible for defining the end-to-end architecture of warehouse management solutions and their supporting integrations, data flows, custom components, and infrastructure. The role translates business capabilities and non-functional requirements into solution designs that support efficient receiving, put-away, inventory management, picking, packing, shipping, and automation processes while meeting expectations for performance, scalability, reliability, security, and supportability.
The System Architect collaborates with client executives, warehouse and logistics leaders, enterprise and solution architects, IT and software development teams, vendors, and consultants. The role serves as a design authority for assigned solutions, balancing operational value, delivery constraints, technical risk, and long-term maintainability while building alignment across business and technical stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Lead discovery and architecture workshops with business and technical stakeholders to clarify operational needs, define solution scope, challenge assumptions, establish priorities, and align on architectural decisions.
- Translate business capabilities into functional, technical, data, integration, security, performance, availability, and supportability requirements.
- Assess current-state processes and system landscapes to identify constraints, risks, dependencies, technical debt, and opportunities for simplification or modernization.
- Define and review compliant code modifications when configuration cannot meet business requirements, ensuring adherence to development, security, testing, documentation, and change-control standards.
- Own the architecture and high-level design of WMS solutions supporting inventory tracking, receiving, put-away, picking, packing, shipping, automation, and barcode RFID processes, evaluating options and documenting key trade-offs and decisions.
- Provide leadership across WMS implementations and upgrades from discovery and solution design through deployment and stabilization, managing technical dependencies, risks, exceptions, and design decisions.
- Define integration architecture, interface patterns, data ownership, error handling, observability, and security requirements across WMS, ERP, transportation management, order management, automation, and other connected systems.
- Provide technical direction to analysts, developers, vendors, and integration teams; review detailed designs and proposed solutions; resolve complex cross-system issues; and ensure delivery aligns with approved architecture and standards.
- Define the technical validation strategy, review test coverage for integrations, custom components, performance, resilience, and security, assess defects and architectural risk, and confirm technical readiness before go-live.
- Train warehouse staff and supervisors on system functionality, workflows, and operating procedures.
- Provide ongoing functional and technical support and coordinate the resolution of system-related issues.
- Monitor solution performance and recommend improvements that reduce cost, improve inventory and picking accuracy, and accelerate fulfilment.
- Create and maintain architecture diagrams, interface specifications, data-flow models, decision records, standards, configuration guidance, and operational documentation while supporting applicable safety, regulatory, security, and governance requirements.
Qualifications
- Approximately 5–8 years of relevant experience in systems analysis, solution or application architecture, WMS implementation, or enterprise supply chain technology.
- Deep knowledge of warehouse management processes and solution design across receiving, put-away, inventory, picking, packing, shipping, labour, automation, and exception handling.
- Experience with Blue Yonder WMS is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with enterprise systems such as SAP, Oracle, or Microsoft Dynamics and with WMS integrations to ERP, TMS, or OMS platforms.
- Strong knowledge of enterprise business application architecture, including component design, integration and data patterns, security, scalability, availability, observability, deployment models, and dependencies across interconnected platforms.
- Strong working knowledge of SQL, Java, Python, JSON, XML, and automation or scripting tools such as PowerShell or Microsoft Power Automate, with the ability to assess code, data, integration, and automation approaches and guide technical teams.
- Demonstrated experience designing enterprise integrations using APIs, EDI, messaging, batch, and file-based patterns, including data mapping, error handling, monitoring, and security considerations.
- Experience developing test cases, supporting system testing and UAT, documenting defects, and validating resolutions.
- Ability to produce clear functional, technical, process, configuration, and user documentation.
- Strong communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to work effectively with warehouse users, business leaders, technical teams, and vendors.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% based on client and project requirements.
- Valid driver’s licence issued in Canada or the United States.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and prioritization skills in fast-paced implementation environments.
