Original job description

As our new Electrical Engineer, you will design, build, and test electrical and electromechanical systems for our Extract Energy heat-to-power technology and other innovative products incorporating shape memory alloys (SMA).

We are looking for a hands-on engineer with experience in electrical hardware, power electronics, controls, and embedded systems who can independently take projects from concept through prototyping, testing, and production. You will have significant technical autonomy while collaborating with our multidisciplinary engineering team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, build, and test electrical and electromechanical systems incorporating SMA technology
  • Design and integrate power electronics, including generators, motor drives, rectifiers, and inverters
  • Design industrial electrical control panels, including schematics, component selection, and compliance with applicable CSA standards and ESA requirements
  • Develop control and data acquisition systems (DAQ), integrating sensors, actuators, and feedback controls
  • Design and test custom electronic circuits and PCBs, including schematic capture and PCB layout
  • Develop embedded firmware and software for hardware control, data acquisition, and system integration
  • Support electrical prototyping, troubleshooting, equipment procurement, commissioning, and validation
  • Collaborate across engineering, R&D, and manufacturing to deliver reliable, production-ready solutions

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechatronics, Computer, or Systems Design Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Hands-on experience designing, assembling, and troubleshooting electrical and electronic systems
  • Strong understanding of power electronics, analog and digital circuits, and control systems
  • Experience developing automation, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems
  • Experience designing industrial electrical panels to applicable CSA standards and Ontario Electrical Safety Code requirements
  • Experience with schematic capture, PCB design, and electronic component selection
  • Proficiency in embedded programming (C/C++) and microcontroller development
  • Strong practical problem-solving skills and ability to independently manage technical projects

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with generators, motor drives, inverters, power conversion, and power management systems (e.g., Victron Energy, OutBack Power)
  • Experience with industrial automation, PLCs, SCADA, and industrial communication protocols
  • Proficiency with PCB design tools, preferably Altium Designer
  • Experience with embedded platforms such as ESP32, STM32, Microchip PIC, Arduino, or Raspberry Pi
  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, or similar programming and data analysis tools
  • Familiarity with ESA equipment approval processes and industrial electrical commissioning
  • Experience with mechatronics, mechanical design, or shape memory alloys
  • Experience in a fast-paced R&D or product development environment
