What you’ll do
- Design mechanical components, assemblies, and systems from concept through detailed design, prototyping, testing, and release to production
- Create 3D models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings in SolidWorks, Inventor, CATIA, Creo, or similar, with GD&T applied correctly
- Run structural, thermal, and fluid analysis (FEA and CFD in ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation, Abaqus, or similar) and use the results to improve designs
- Select materials, fasteners, bearings, seals, motors, and other components, balancing performance, cost, weight, and manufacturability
- Apply Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFM/DFA) with machining, sheet metal, casting, welding, injection moulding, and additive manufacturing
- Build and test prototypes, run tolerance stack-ups, and lead design reviews, FMEAs, and root-cause investigations
- Work with suppliers, machine shops, and fabricators across Canada to get parts made right, on time, and on budget
- Manage BOMs, ECOs, and revisions in PLM or ERP systems (Windchill, Teamcenter, Arena, SAP, or similar)
- Design for standards and codes such as CSA, ASME, ISO, and CRN registration where applicable, and support certification and audit documentation
- Support commissioning, installation, and field troubleshooting, including site visits to plants and customer facilities
- Use Python, MATLAB, or Excel to automate calculations and design studies, and use AI-assisted tools and generative design carefully to explore options faster, with your professional judgment on every drawing and sign-off
- Collaborate with electrical, controls, software, quality, and manufacturing teams to deliver products people rely on
- Write clear design specs, test reports, and work instructions
Find your level
- Level - Typical experience - What you’ll own
- Mechanical Design Engineer I / EIT - 0-2 years : Detailed CAD, drawings, calculations, and prototype testing, learning with a dedicated mentor and a clear path to your P.Eng.
- Mechanical Design Engineer II - 2-5 years : Owning subsystems or full product designs, leading analysis and testing, working directly with suppliers, and mentoring junior engineers
- Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - 5+ years : Leading complex designs and programs, signing off as a P.Eng. where required, setting design standards, guiding architecture decisions, and shaping the product roadmap
Promotion criteria are written down at every level, with regular career conversations. Many of our engineers have moved into engineering management, product development, systems engineering, project engineering, and technical specialist roles.
