Original job description

As our Logistics Specialist, you'll take ownership of daily shipping and transportation activities, coordinating domestic and international shipments, managing documentation, and resolving challenges to keep materials and products moving efficiently.

We're looking for a resourceful, solutions-driven problem solver who thinks critically, exercises sound judgment and takes initiative. You'll work independently, navigate shifting priorities, and turn operational challenges into practical solutions while maintaining accuracy and accountability.

This is a hands-on role where accuracy, accountability, and independent problem-solving are essential to success. You'll thrive in an environment where priorities can shift, unexpected challenges arise, and your ability to think on your feet makes a meaningful difference.

WHY THIS ROLE, WHY NOW

At Smartrend Manufacturing Group (SMG), we design, engineer, and manufacture technology that solves real-world transportation challenges, and we're growing fast.

Over the past five years, that growth has enabled significant investment in our people, our capabilities, and our automotive systems business. These investments include a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, which we will move into in May 2027, along with enhanced R&D equipment, tooling, technology, and infrastructure that strengthen our engineering capabilities and accelerate product innovation.

We're building more here – more capability, more technology, and more opportunity. And we're looking for people who want to work in a collaborative and fun environment to fuel our next wave of innovation.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Coordinate daily inbound and outbound shipments, ensuring the accurate and timely movement of materials and finished products.
Prepare, verify, and maintain shipping documentation, including bills of lading, commercial invoices, customs paperwork, and delivery records.
Independently investigate logistics challenges, apply critical thinking to evaluate options, and implement practical solutions to minimize operational disruptions.
Proactively identify potential shipping delays, discrepancies, or service issues, taking ownership of corrective actions through to resolution.
Maintain accurate shipping, receiving, and transportation records within the company's ERP system, ensuring documentation is complete and up to date.
Coordinate with Warehouse, Purchasing, Production, and Customer Service teams to support daily operational priorities and timely deliveries.
Ensure logistics activities comply with established company procedures, shipping requirements, and applicable transportation regulations.

WHAT YOU BRING

3–5 years of hands-on experience in logistics coordination, shipping administration, freight coordination, or a related role, preferably within a manufacturing or distribution environment.
Demonstrated ability to independently investigate and resolve logistics challenges, applying critical thinking, sound judgment, and a practical, solutions-oriented approach.
Working knowledge of domestic and international shipping processes, freight coordination, and transportation requirements.
General understanding of customs procedures and cross-border shipping documentation.
Experience using ERP systems to manage shipping information, maintain accurate records, and support daily logistics activities.
A proactive, accountable approach to work, with the confidence to make informed decisions, take initiative, and follow issues through to resolution.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with carriers, suppliers, and internal teams.
Post-secondary education in logistics, supply chain management, business administration, or a related field is considered an asset; equivalent practical experience will also be considered.
Industry certifications such as Certified Canadian Logistics Professional (CCLP) or a CIFFA Certificate are considered assets.

Employee perks- access to company season tickets with the Winnipeg Jets and Blue Bombers, frequent employee events, and other experiences and perks throughout the year.
