This is an exceptional opportunity for a technology leader who is passionate about building modern application, data, and integration capabilities while helping shape the future of technology across the firm.

This role is based in our Vancouver office, with the opportunity to work in a hybrid environment following the completion of the probationary period.

The Opportunity

The Director, Application, Data & Integration is responsible for building and leading Smythe’s enterprise application, data and integration capabilities.

The role provides technical leadership across the firm’s application landscape and establishes the engineering disciplines required to deliver secure, reliable and maintainable solutions. A key mandate is to transform how the development team works through AI-assisted engineering, automation and modern DevOps practices, driving significant improvements in development productivity and delivery speed.

The Director will also build Smythe’s data engineering and analytics capabilities and lead the integration architecture that connects the firm’s core systems. This is a capability-building leadership role supporting Smythe’s Connected Firm strategy and continued technology modernization.

In This Role, You Will

Application Strategy & Architecture

  • Provide technical leadership and architecture oversight across Smythe’s enterprise application landscape.
  • Establish application architecture, development and lifecycle standards.
  • Guide solution design for new applications and major enhancements.
  • Partner with Product Owners to translate business requirements into sustainable technical solutions.
  • Provide technical oversight of implementation partners and third-party development resources.

Engineering Discipline, DevOps & AI-Assisted Development
  • Build and mature Smythe’s software engineering practices, including development standards, source control, code review, testing and documentation.
  • Establish CI/CD, environment and release-management capabilities to enable controlled and repeatable deployments.
  • Embed application security and secure development practices throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Lead adoption of AI-assisted development across the engineering team to accelerate development, testing, documentation and delivery.
  • Drive significant, multi-fold improvements in engineering productivity while maintaining appropriate security, quality and human oversight.
  • Strengthen automated testing, application monitoring and overall technical quality.

    Integration & Connected Firm Architecture
  • Own Smythe’s integration architecture and technical integration standards.
  • Establish consistent approaches for APIs, interfaces and system-to-system data exchange.
  • Ensure integrations across the application landscape are secure, resilient, supportable and appropriately monitored.
  • Maintain an architectural view of how applications, integrations and data work together to support the Connected Firm.

    Dynamics & DPO Technical Leadership
  • Provide technical leadership for Smythe’s transition to Dynamics 365 Project Operations and the broader Dynamics platform.
  • Work with Product Owners and implementation partners on architecture, integration and technical design.
  • Build sufficient internal capability to support, maintain and extend the platform over time.
  • Ensure Dynamics development follows Smythe’s engineering, security and application-management standards.

    Data Management, Engineering & Analytics
  • Develop Smythe’s enterprise data architecture and technical data-management approach.
  • Build data engineering capabilities to integrate, transform and make trusted data available across the firm.
  • Establish approaches for master data, data quality, lineage and technical data controls.
  • Build and lead the firm’s emerging data engineering and data analytics capabilities.
  • Enable consistent enterprise reporting and analytics.
  • Partner with Product Owners and business stakeholders on data ownership and governance.

    People & Capability Leadership
  • Build and lead capabilities spanning application development, integration, QA, data engineering and analytics.
  • Develop technical staff and establish clear engineering expectations and practices.
  • Determine the appropriate balance of internal capabilities, implementation partners and specialized contractors.
  • Build a culture focused on technical quality, accountability, continuous improvement and effective use of AI-assisted development.

    Security, Risk & Operational Partnership
  • Partner with IT Operations to ensure applications and integrations meet Smythe’s security, resilience and operational requirements.
  • Embed security-by-design into application architecture and engineering practices.
  • Ensure solutions incorporate appropriate access, data protection, monitoring and operational support requirements.

What You Bring

  • Demonstrated experience building or maturing software engineering and DevOps practices.
  • Strong understanding of modern application architecture, APIs, integrations and cloud platforms.
  • Practical experience with CI/CD, automated testing, secure development and application lifecycle management.
  • Experience adopting modern development practices and AI-assisted development tools to materially improve engineering productivity and software delivery.
  • Experience with data architecture, data engineering, analytics or business intelligence.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary technical teams and external technology partners.
  • Microsoft technology and Dynamics 365 experience is strongly preferred.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with both technical teams and business leaders.

Leadership Characteristics

The successful candidate will:

  • Be a builder, comfortable creating and scaling capabilities that do not yet fully exist.
  • Bring strong engineering discipline while remaining pragmatic about business delivery.
  • Be forward-looking in the use of AI and automation to fundamentally improve how technology is delivered.
