About Us

SNOLAB is Canada’s deep-underground science laboratory, located at a depth of 2 kilometers in Vale’s Creighton Mine near Sudbury, Ontario. The facility supports world-class astroparticle physics research and has attracted innovative life science and quantum technology programs. SNOLAB operates in a controlled, air-conditioned clean-room environment, supported by a suite of surface facilities and laboratories, supported by a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, skilled tradespeople, technical staff, and support staff.

By hosting and enabling the world’s most advanced and sensitive underground experiments, SNOLAB bolsters Canada’s scientific reputation, attracts new talent to our country and Northern Ontario, trains more highly skilled people, provides more opportunities for Canadian researchers to lead international projects, and generates economic benefits for Ontarians and Canadians.

The Position

The Technical Services Manager is responsible for the management and performance of the technical and trades staff (eg. mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation), and for the management and maintenance of the machine shops, tools, and equipment. Additionally, they are accountable for the mobile fleet, all the facility lifting devices, and scaffolding systems. The position involves project and work planning, scheduling and planning resources, and consulting with SNOLAB and external project groups on their trade resource requirements. The manager will create and maintain electronic workflows to import work requests, provide access through the SharePoint, and interface to asset management and change control processes. The manager will also chair hazard and technical reviews, participate and report in science collaboration meetings, and conduct all other general management responsibilities.

· Provides technical and managerial leadership for the Technical Services and Logistics groups, ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of maintenance, trades, and logistical support for SNOLAB operations.

· Oversees departmental planning, budgeting, resource allocation, and scheduling to support operational priorities and SNOLAB’s strategic objectives.

· Directs the maintenance, inspection, and management of surface and underground facilities, machine shops, equipment, and assets to ensure reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance.

· Leads workforce planning, staff development, performance management, and labour relations, fostering accountability, teamwork, and compliance with collective agreements and organizational policies.

· Coordinates technical services and logistics activities with Vale, internal departments, scientific project teams, and external partners to support operational requirements, infrastructure projects, and underground access.

· Oversees continuous improvement, technical reviews, hazard assessments, regulatory inspections, and emergency response to strengthen operational readiness, safety, and overall performance.

Criteria

Education:

· An advanced diploma in engineering technology from a recognized institution, OR a B.Eng. or B.S. degree in a relevant engineering or science discipline.

· Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) designation in Ontario, OR registration as a professional engineer in Ontario (P.Eng.), or eligibility for registration, is preferred.

· A Red seal certification in a relevant trade is considered an asset.

Experience:

· Experience managing a mechanical installation crew or construction environment.

· Experience working with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, with emphasis on Regulations 851 and 854.

· Experience communicating, liaising, negotiating, and coordinating with external stakeholders, contractors, and regulatory inspection bodies.

· Experience in the maintenance and development of operations processes, procedures, and records of facilities.

· Knowledge of project management principles and scheduling.

· Strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical constructions and repair.

· Experience with MS Office, MS-365, scheduling and asset management applications.

Salary Range: $143,242- $171,167 per annum
