Accounting Manager

About our client

Our client is one of North America's largest family-owned infrastructure contractors, with more than 10,000 employees and a long-established presence in Canada. They deliver complex civil, utility, energy and trenchless projects, and they're known for a strong safety culture, a close-knit way of working, and the backing and stability of a large organisation.

They're now looking for an Accounting Manager to join their Canadian finance team. This is a newly created role, so it's a great opportunity for someone who wants to make it their own, help shape how the team works, and grow with the business.

The role

As Accounting Manager, you'll take ownership of the balance sheet side of accounting for the Canadian business, working closely with the operations-focused Controller and reporting to the Corporate Controller. You'll lead and support an intermediate accountant, with scope for the team to grow as the business develops.

You'll also be joining at an exciting time. Our client is moving to a new global ERP system (Workday), and you'll be closely involved in the testing and rollout, becoming a go-to person for the system within the Canadian team.

What you'll be doing

  • Managing the month-end, quarter-end and year-end close, including account reconciliations, journal entries and fixed assets
  • Maintaining an accurate general ledger and preparing reliable financial statements and reports under US GAAP
  • Looking after Canadian tax requirements, including GST/HST, alongside corporate tax filings
  • Supporting the annual external audit and interim audit, coordinating schedules and deliverables
  • Reviewing current processes and controls, identifying improvements and putting them in place at the right pace for the team
  • Playing a key role in the Workday ERP implementation, including testing and training colleagues
  • Supporting, coaching and developing your direct report, and helping shape what the team needs in the future
  • Building strong relationships with leaders across the Canadian business and working collaboratively with the wider North American finance team, including on occasional special projects
  • Contributing to a strong safety and teamwork culture across the business

What you'll bring

  • A degree in Accounting or Finance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Several years of progressive accounting experience, ideally 7 or more, although strong candidates ready to step up are very welcome to apply
  • Experience supervising, mentoring or managing others
  • A solid understanding of US GAAP and full-cycle accounting, including month-end close and reconciliations
  • Experience with financial or ERP systems, with Workday experience a bonus
  • Strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills
  • A CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant) designation is an asset but not essential
  • Experience in construction or utilities is a strong advantage

Who you are

  • A collaborative team player who builds trust and works well with people at all levels
  • Someone who takes the time to understand how things work before suggesting changes, and brings people along with them
  • Confident making decisions and working independently, while still comfortable asking questions and talking things through
  • An approachable, supportive leader who can also bring direction and structure to the team
  • Organised and detail-oriented, with a real eye for accuracy
  • Responsive and willing to go the extra mile when it matters, such as at month-end and year-end

What's on offer

  • A newly created role where you can make a real impact and help shape the team
  • Hands-on involvement in a major global ERP implementation
  • The stability and support of a large, well-established organisation, with the feel of a close-knit local team
  • A competitive salary and bonus eligibility
  • A strong employer-paid benefits program
  • 5% RRSP/TFSA matching
  • Opportunities to grow as the Canadian business develops

If this sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you.
