Original job description

Financial Analyst II

About our client

Our client is one of North America’s largest family-owned infrastructure contractors, with more than 10,000 employees and a long-established presence in Canada. They deliver complex civil, utility, energy and trenchless projects, and they’re known for a strong safety culture, a close-knit way of working, and the backing and stability of a large organisation.

They’re now looking for a Financial Analyst II to join their Canadian finance team. This is a newer, more senior analyst role, so it’s a great opportunity for someone who wants to make a real impact, help build out the budgeting and forecasting side of the business, and grow with the team.

The role

As Financial Analyst II, you’ll report to the Controller and be a key support across month-end analysis, budgeting, forecasting and reporting. As you settle in, you’ll work more closely with business leaders across the Canadian operations, helping them understand their numbers and make well-informed decisions. This is an office-based role, working on-site five days a week.

You’ll also be joining at an exciting time. Our client is introducing more rigorous budgeting and forecasting and moving to a new global ERP system (Workday), so there’s plenty of opportunity to shape how things are done.

What you’ll be doing

  • Supporting month-end analysis, preparing the financials and explaining variances against budget and forecast
  • Building and maintaining budgeting, forecasting and long-range planning models
  • Preparing clear financial and operational reporting that turns the numbers into useful insights for the business
  • Monitoring project performance, including revenue, costs, margin, backlog and cash flow
  • Supporting project setup and project accounting activities where needed
  • Meeting with business leaders and helping run financial review meetings
  • Identifying improvements to processes and reporting, and supporting the move to Workday
  • Contributing to a strong safety and teamwork culture across the business

What you’ll bring

  • A degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Around 3 to 6 years of experience in financial analysis, FP&A, project finance or accounting
  • Advanced Excel skills, including building financial models and forecasts
  • A solid understanding of budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis and financial reporting
  • Experience in construction or another project-based industry is a strong advantage
  • Experience with ERP systems and reporting tools, with Power BI or Workday experience a bonus
  • A CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant) designation, or progress towards one, is an asset but not essential

Who you are

  • Naturally curious, always asking “why” and happy to dig into the numbers to find the answer
  • A confident problem solver who’s comfortable when things aren’t black and white
  • Approachable, open-minded and flexible in how you approach problems
  • Able to explain financial information clearly to colleagues outside of finance
  • Organised and detail-oriented, with a real eye for accuracy
  • Comfortable working independently while being a strong support to your manager

What’s on offer

  • A newer role with real scope to make an impact and grow
  • Hands-on involvement in building out budgeting and forecasting, and in a major global ERP rollout
  • The stability and support of a large, well-established organisation, with the feel of a close-knit local team
  • A competitive salary
  • A strong employer-paid benefits program
  • 5% RRSP/TFSA matching
  • Opportunities to grow as the Canadian business develops

If this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.
