About the Position:
The Business Development Manager – Solar is responsible for developing and growing Canadian Energy’s solar and energy storage business within an assigned Canadian region, with a focus on residential, rural/off-grid and light-commercial applications. The role is primarily a new-business (“hunter”) role, winning and developing new relationships with solar installers, electrical contractors, dealers and other renewable energy professionals, then partnering with the regional sales team to grow those accounts over time.
The BDM originates and develops installer relationships and new channels to market, leads strategic sales opportunities and works closely with Canadian Energy’s regional Territory Sales Managers (TSMs) and branches across the assigned region. Once a new account is established and handed off, TSMs and branches provide ongoing account coverage and transactional support, while the BDM remains engaged in customer development, product opportunities and regional solar growth. The position draws on internal product and technical resources as needed.
As a Canadian Energy team member, a typical week will include the following:
New Business & Channel Development
- Identify, prospect, win and onboard new solar installer, electrical contractor, dealer and channel partner relationships within the assigned region in line with agreed new-account targets.
- Build and actively manage a target account list and sales pipeline for the region; identify customer decision-makers, assess fit and advance opportunities through the sales process, from first contact through to first order.
- Proactively plan and conduct new-prospect customer visits, calls and presentations, including cold outreach, to introduce Canadian Energy’s solar and energy storage offering.
- Build and maintain strategic relationships with key installers and customers to support long-term, profitable business growth.
- Expand solar and storage business within newly won and strategic accounts by identifying upcoming projects, additional product requirements and opportunities to increase share of customer purchases, in coordination with the responsible TSM.
- Identify, recommend and lead relevant regional lead-generation activities, installer associations, industry events and potential channel partnerships.
- Collaborate with regional TSMs and branches to identify solar opportunities within their existing customer relationships and coordinate appropriate follow-up.
Territory Manager Collaboration & Account Handoff
- Meet regularly with each TSM in the assigned region to share the target account list, review the pipeline and identify solar and storage opportunities within the TSM’s existing customer relationships.
- Plan joint customer calls with TSMs where a TSM relationship already exists, agreeing in advance who leads and what each party’s role is.
- Follow company account-ownership guidelines: confirm with the responsible TSM or branch before approaching an account they already serve, and avoid duplicate or conflicting outreach.
- Hand off newly won accounts to the responsible TSM and branch for ongoing coverage and transactional support, using an agreed transition plan, while remaining involved in strategic opportunities, product introductions and account expansion.
- Pass leads that fall outside the BDM’s focus (for example, non-solar needs at an installer) to the appropriate TSM or branch and follow up to confirm they were actioned.
- Record all new accounts, referrals and handoffs in CRM so that new-business results and sales credit are tracked consistently between the BDM and TSMs.
Sales Execution & Customer Support
- Understand customer applications and recommend appropriate solar modules, energy storage, inverters and related system components, engaging internal technical resources when needed.
- Explain product features, application benefits and competitive differentiation to installers, customers and regional sales personnel.
- Prepare, present and negotiate product recommendations, quotations and sales proposals, driving new-account opportunities through to first purchase and coordinating fulfillment with the responsible TSM and branch.
- Support regional TSMs and branches in competitive sales situations with product information, comparisons and commercial guidance within established company practices.
- Coordinate with branches and internal teams regarding product availability, customer inquiries, order requirements and other sales-related needs.
- Identify installer and sales team education needs and arrange product introductions or technical training using appropriate internal resources.
- Help coordinate the resolution of customer concerns and service issues through the responsible branch or support team, maintaining a positive customer relationship.
Market Knowledge & Performance
- Gather and communicate installer feedback on product requirements, applications, pricing, availability and barriers to adoption; represent the voice of the customer internally.
- Monitor competitor offerings, product positioning, market pricing and relevant regional industry developments, sharing actionable insights with sales leadership.
- Provide input to internal product and commercial teams on portfolio gaps, customer needs and opportunities for improvements, without owning product roadmaps or pricing policy.
- Contribute relevant product and competitive insights to sales materials and regional sales discussions in collaboration with internal resources.
- Maintain accurate prospect and customer information, activities, opportunities, next steps, account handoffs and sales forecasts in CRM.
- Deliver assigned new-account, pipeline, regional sales and profitability targets while following company pricing practices and exercising sound commercial judgment.
- Represent Canadian Energy at installer meetings, branch activities and industry events as required; participate in ongoing product and sales training.
