Original job description

Why We’re More Than Trailers

For 45 years, Southland Trailers has been building more than trailers - we’ve been building a company where people come first. Today, we’re one of Canada’s largest trailer manufacturers with 560+ team members and a simple operating philosophy: people first, processes second, products third.

We believe in hard work, open communication, a positive attitude, continuous improvement, and leading with humility and respect. Using LEAN manufacturing and modern technology, we design and build high-quality trailers while constantly finding better ways to work.

At Southland, you’ll find a collaborative, hands-on environment where ideas are welcomed, initiative is valued, and your work makes a real impact.

If you’re driven, curious, and want to grow with a company that’s going places - you’ll fit right in.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Student Welder to join our team and help take Southland Trailers to the next level. In this role, you’ll be part of a dynamic team that works together to drive innovation, quality, and success. If you’re a self-starter who loves challenges, we want to hear from you!

What We’re Looking For

Currently enrolled in high school (Grade 10, 11, or 12) and participating in, or interested in, a welding course.
Eager to learn and develop welding skills in a hands-on manufacturing environment.
Interest in pursuing a welding apprenticeship and obtaining a valid blue book.
Willingness to follow 5S and LEAN manufacturing principles (training provided).
Basic mechanical skills and the ability to safely use hand and power tools (training provided).
Physical ability to lift, push, pull, and position materials weighing up to 40 lbs.
Ability to understand simple written instructions and perform basic math calculations.
Strong communication skills and a positive attitude for working with team members and supervisors.

What You’ll Do

Start your day with an early morning team huddle/stretch to get ready for the work ahead.
Learn how to prepare materials and equipment for welding projects.
Assist with simple welding tasks under the guidance of experienced team members.
Practice safe use of hand and power tools (such as grinders, drills, and plasma cutters) with supervision.
Help measure and check materials to ensure they meet project requirements.
Learn to examine welds and understand what good quality looks like.
Work in different positions (bend, squat, kneel, and stand) while helping with welding and fabrication tasks.
Keep your work area clean and organized by following daily 5S housekeeping practices.
Follow instructions and standard operating procedures to ensure safe, consistent results.
Communicate with your supervisor or mentor if you notice an issue or have a question.
Take part in on-the-job training to improve your welding skills and knowledge.
Support your team by assisting wherever needed to keep production moving smoothly.
