Junior School Assistant Principal

Full Time Permanent

Southpointe Academy is a leading edge International Baccalaureate (IB) Continuum School surrounded by the ocean, beaches and natural beauty of South Delta. As a co-educational, secular day school serving 750 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12, Southpointe is known for its strong sense of community, collaborative culture and commitment to professional development.

We are seeking an experienced and collaborative educational leader to serve as Assistant Principal for our Junior School (K–5). The Assistant Principal is a key member of the Junior School leadership team, working closely with the Junior School Principal to provide effective leadership of the K–5 programme. The role has particular responsibility for faculty and staff supervision, student behaviour and well-being, student life, daily operations, and experiential learning, while contributing to instructional leadership and the broader strategic priorities of the School.

This full-time leadership position commences August 16, 2027.

Key Duties and Responsibilities *These may include, but are not limited to...

Leadership, People & Culture

Support the Junior School Principal in the leadership, strategic direction, and day-to-day operation of the Junior School, assuming additional leadership responsibilities when the Principal is absent or unavailable.
Provide direct leadership, supervision, and performance oversight for a designated group of teachers, specialist teachers, and support staff, as assigned by the Junior School Principal.
Conduct formal evaluations and support professional growth through observation, coaching, feedback, goal setting, and professional dialogue.
Uphold and enforce high expectations for teaching, professional conduct, collaboration, and fulfilment of responsibilities, addressing performance concerns, conflict, and disciplinary matters decisively, implementing appropriate corrective measures, and advancing matters for further action when warranted.
Contribute to staffing decisions, including recruitment, selection, onboarding, development, and retention.
Support effective labour relations, consistent application of the Collective Agreement, and collective bargaining priorities relevant to the Junior School.
Foster a positive, collaborative, and inclusive staff culture, including organizing team-building activities and opportunities that strengthen relationships, collegiality, and a sense of community among Junior School faculty and staff.

Student Life & Community Building

Provide leadership for a vibrant Junior School student life programme that strengthens belonging, relationships, leadership, participation, and school spirit.
Develop and lead meaningful opportunities for students to connect beyond the classroom, including after-school community-building events, social activities, celebrations, and other age-appropriate experiences.
Lead the strategic development of co-curricular programmes.
Promote Island (House) spirit through activities and events.
Seek new opportunities to enhance the student experience and create traditions and experiences that build connection within and across grade levels.
Contribute to Parent Information Sessions and other initiatives that strengthen relationships and partnership with Junior School families.
Lead Student Council initiatives, collaborating with Junior School Coordinator(s) where applicable.

Teaching & Learning

Work with the Junior School Principal and PYP Coordinator to support consistently strong teaching and learning across K–5.
Promote research-informed instructional practice, differentiation, student engagement, and purposeful technology integration.
Support high-quality assessment and reporting practices, including review of report cards prior to publication.
Oversee the administration of the Grade 4 Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA).
Assume designated teaching responsibilities, modelling strong instructional practice and maintaining meaningful connections with students and classroom learning.

Operations, Safety & Experiential Learning

Support the effective daily operation of the Junior School, including supervision schedules, emergency preparedness, and other operational priorities.
Support risk management planning for Junior School field trips, chaperone outdoor education trips, and coordinate off-campus learning experiences.
Support the Junior School Principal in designing extended experiential learning opportunities, including multi-day trips and travel beyond the Lower Mainland, with appropriate attention to educational purpose, accessibility, supervision, logistics, safety, and risk management.
Assist in the recruitment, programming, and scheduling of international GAP students.
Represent the Junior School in relevant professional networks and participate actively in major school and K–12 community events.

Student Behaviour, Well-Being & Safety

Provide visible leadership for student behaviour, safety, social-emotional well-being, and a positive and inclusive school culture.
Serve as a primary administrative point of resolution for significant or recurring student behaviour concerns, working with students, faculty, and families to establish appropriate interventions, expectations, consequences, and follow-up.
Lead the management of student behaviour on school buses, including investigation, communication, intervention, and follow-up in collaboration with families and relevant school and transportation personnel.
Support faculty in implementing consistent, developmentally appropriate approaches to behaviour management, conflict resolution, restorative practices, and student accountability.
Monitor patterns in student behaviour, incidents, and well-being to identify emerging concerns and inform proactive student supports.
Respond appropriately to student safety and safeguarding concerns in accordance with school policies, reporting requirements, and established protocols.
Contribute to admissions, student assessments and class placements.

Required Qualifications

Strong understanding of the IB PYP and contemporary teaching and learning in an independent school environment.
Demonstrated educational leadership experience, including faculty supervision and development, student behaviour and well-being, conflict resolution, school operations, and building a positive school culture.
Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and decision-making skills, with the ability to build relationships and navigate challenging situations with professionalism, sound judgement, and empathy.
Valid BC Certificate of Qualification or Independent School Teaching Certificate, or eligibility to obtain one.
Master’s degree in Education, Educational Leadership, Administration, or a related field preferred, or currently in progress.
Significant successful elementary teaching experience, preferably within an IB PYP environment, and a minimum of two years of educational leadership experience.
