THE OPPORTUNITY:

Special Olympics Alberta is seeking an experienced Finance & Accounting Manager to lead the organization’s financial operations and provide financial insight and guidance to senior leadership and the Board.

This is a hands-on, full-cycle accounting role with responsibility for financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, payroll, compliance, audit, internal controls, and financial systems. As the organization’s sole finance and accounting professional, the successful candidate will be comfortable working independently, managing the day-to-day accounting function while also providing strategic financial advice.

The ideal candidate is a CPA with strong technical accounting experience, sound professional judgement, and a commitment to accurate, transparent, and responsible financial management. Experience in a Canadian nonprofit or registered charitable organization is strongly preferred.

ABOUT SPECIAL OLYMPICS ALBERTA:

Special Olympics Alberta is part of the world’s largest sports organization for people with intellectual disabilities, with more than 4.5 million athletes in 170 countries and millions more volunteers and supporters.

Special Olympics delivers year-round sport programs to people with intellectual disabilities of all ages and abilities in communities across Alberta. Special Olympics Alberta offers programs in more than 100 communities and supports approximately 3,000 athletes participating in 18 official sports.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead the organization’s full-cycle accounting function, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, banking, reconciliations, and quarterly- and year-end close.
Prepare quarterly financial statements, management reporting, variance analysis, forecasts, and financial information for the CEO, Senior Vice President, and Board/Finance Committee.
Lead the annual budgeting process and provide financial analysis, forecasting, and advice to support organizational planning and decision-making.
Manage financial compliance, including T3010, GST/HST, payroll remittances, grant reporting, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
Lead year-end audit preparation and serve as the primary finance contact with external auditors.
Develop and maintain effective financial policies, procedures, internal controls, and risk-management practices.
Manage QuickBooks and financial systems, and identify opportunities to improve financial processes, reporting, efficiency, and data integrity.
Provide financial guidance and support to leadership and budget owners and promote financial accountability across the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS:

CPA designation required.
Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including full-cycle accounting.
Experience supporting financial operations in a federated or multi-entity structure, including integrating affiliate/community finances, reporting, controls, and processes.
Strong financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and analytical skills.
Knowledge of Canadian accounting, tax, charitable, and regulatory requirements.
Experience with T3010, GST/HST, payroll remittances, and external audits.
Strong proficiency with QuickBooks and Excel
Strong understanding of internal controls, financial policies, and risk management.
Excellent attention to detail, organization, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and exercise sound professional judgment.
High level of integrity, confidentiality, accountability, and discretion.
