St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton is an Academic Health Science Centre affiliated with McMaster University and a tertiary referral centre for Central South Ontario offering services at three main sites, including St. Joseph's Hospital (Charlton Campus), the Centre for Ambulatory Health Services (King Campus), and the Margaret and Charles Juravinski Centre for Integrated Healthcare (West 5th Campus).
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton is a high demand, high volume service which provides acute inpatient care and ambulatory services to our Local Integrated Health Network. Our outpatient clinic services in the Fontbonne Building accommodates more than 30,000 patient visits annually. Here we provide care for obstetrical patients, common gynecological issues, menopause care, and colposcopy. There is an overwhelming need for our clinic to see these patients from our community in a timely manner, which is becoming more and more challenging because of the high volumes that we encounter. A Physician Assistant will provide much needed assistance to facilitate care in a timely manner.
Reporting to the Manager of Medical & Academic Affairs in collaboration with the physician leadership in the department, the Physician Assistant (PA) works collaboratively with the interprofessional Obstetrics & Gynecology team to deliver healthcare to patients. Within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the PA is authorized to extend physician services through comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, intervention, referral, management, treatment, and evaluation of patients requiring acute health services.
Our vision for Physicians Assistants in our clinic includes but is not limited to the following roles:
- Performing the initial intake for 15-20 low or intermediate risk obstetrical patients each week. After the initial intake these patients will be assigned to an Obstetrician who will review the intake with the PA, meet the patient and then continue ongoing care. In this way we will be able to accept more referrals from our community, attaching these patients to an obstetrician and streamlining our provision of obstetrical care
- A Physicians Assistant will be able to assist in the management of patients in a postpartum hypertension clinic. Gestational hypertension is a very common problem and in order to provide high standard care we will be able to monitor blood pressure and make medication adjustments at a time when it is common to have fluctuations in blood pressure which require attention and care. We will be able to do this in an ambulatory setting rather than in our triage unit and be able to safely discharge our patients from hospital with BP follow up within 48-72 hours.
- At an increasing rate, patients are presenting to the Emergency Department with post-menopausal bleeding. This is a clinical presentation which requires urgent triaging and investigation. A Physicians Assistant will be able to triage these patients in a Point-of-Care clinic and can be trained to do endometrial biopsies and HPV testing as an initial vital investigation.
- On Wednesday afternoons at our hospital, our residents attend an academic half day and the on-call Obstetrician/Gynecologist is often the sole physician for our service. A Physicians Assistant at our centre will help assess patients in the Labor and Delivery triage unit or initiate consultations in the emergency department. In addition, a PA will able to address medical concerns for inpatients in hospital for both the obstetrical and gynecological services. In this way, wait times for acute care will be minimized as there will be another care provider on site in hospital.
- A physician assistant lens will be important as we build new models of care to address the increasing volume of OB and GYN referrals to our limited number of physicians. Primary care is invested in looking at Healthcare pathways and a centralized referral base, having physician assistant(s) assist in building the new models of care and contributing their lens on how PAs can strengthen our health care system will be invaluable.
QUALIFICATIONS and SKILLS:
- Preference will be given to a new graduate
- Graduate of an accredited Canadian or US PA training program
- Certification (CCPA or PA-C) or eligible for certification through the PA Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) or United States (NCCPA)
- Be registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), where required by law, and maintain such registration in good standing throughout the Term.
- Demonstrates superior communication skills
- Able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary healthcare team environment
- Able to work independently within their scope of practice and within the physician-PA relationship
- Willing to work a variety of shifts to support optimal patient care (i.e. daytime, evenings, overnight, weekends or alternative hours as needed)
- Will bring energy and enthusiasm to this position
- Demonstrates support for the Mission Statement of St Joseph’s Healthcare
Temporary for 1 year with opportunity to extend
