Original job description

About the role

You will be our first in-house finance hire. We're a fast-moving startup with money moving across a large vaulted inventory, a buyback program, and withdrawals across the US and Canada. That means real complexity in inventory, revenue recognition, cash flow, and cross-border tax.

You'll start as the owner of our accounting function: you’ll work with the product team so our books keep up with what we ship, close on time every month, and give the team visibility on cash position. Right now our books are handled by an outside provider. Your first job is to bring accounting in-house by setting up the systems, processes and automations to make it clean, fast, and reliable. As the foundation gets solid, your role will grow into a strategic finance focus: modelling, forecasting, budgeting, and getting us ready for our next raise. This is a high-intensity role with incredible exposure to the most critical decisions influencing the growth of the business, and reports to the CEO.

What you'll do

The Foundation

  • Lead the transition from our outside accounting provider to an in-house setup: system selection or cleanup (QuickBooks / Xero / NetSuite), data migration, historical cleanup, and a smooth handover
  • Own the chart of accounts and keep line items clean, consistent, and useful for decision-making
  • Close the books every month on a tight timeline, including accruals, prepaids, inventory, and deferred revenue
  • Run reconciliations across bank, payment processors, payout/withdrawal flows, inventory, and buyback activity
  • Keep cash flow healthy and forecasted: a rolling 13-week cash forecast, AP/AR, and visibility into payouts and inventory spend
  • Work with our external accountants and advisors on year-end, tax filings (CA/US, sales tax / GST/HST), and any audit or review
  • Set up the controls, policies, and processes that let finance scale with the business

Strategic Finance

  • Build and maintain the company financial model: projections, unit economics, and scenario planning
  • Run budget vs. actuals with the leadership team and turn variances into decisions
  • Play a critical role in raising capital: assess opportunities, own the data room, generate investor reporting and board materials

What you'll get

  • A seat at the table at a high-velocity startup with real revenue, real users, and a genuine shot at becoming the defining platform in gamified TCG and sports commerce
  • Exposure to high impact decision-making
  • Competitive compensation, equity, and the chance to build something that matters in a space you actually care about

Qualifications

  • CPA designation (CPA, CA or CPA, CMA)
  • 4–8 years of experience, ideally starting at a Big 4 or mid-tier firm and then moving in-house at a startup or scale-up
  • You've owned a monthly close end-to-end, not just contributed to one
  • You've led or played a major role in an accounting-system migration (QuickBooks, Xero, or NetSuite)
  • Some FP&A experience: you can build a financial model from scratch or have influenced successful strategic initiatives at other companies
  • You're obsessive about clean books, and you're also practical about what matters most at a startup
  • You're AI-native, or eager to be. You’ve used AI tools to do the work of a bigger team
  • You excel in ambiguous, fast-paced environments with a strong bias towards action
  • Excellent written communication: you can explain the numbers clearly to people who aren't in finance
  • Interest in TCGs (Pokémon, One Piece), sports cards, collectibles, or gaming

Nice to have

  • Experience in gaming, fintech, payments, or marketplaces, especially revenue recognition for those models
  • Experience with inventory accounting for physical goods
  • Experience with cross-border (US/CA) tax or sales tax
  • Fundraising support experience: data rooms, due diligence, investor reporting
