Your Opportunity
Stantec is seeking a Geotechnical Engineering Graduate to join our Mining Geotechnical and Tailings team in Markham, Ontario. Working under the guidance and supervision of intermediate and senior engineers, you will support field investigations, geotechnical data processing, engineering analyses, design and reporting for mining, tailings, dam and related infrastructure projects. The role provides broad exposure to office, field and construction activities and a structured opportunity to develop practical geotechnical engineering skills.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Support geotechnical site investigations, including supervision of borehole drilling, test pit excavations, in situ testing, sampling and installation of geotechnical instrumentation.
- Compile, review and process borehole, test pit, laboratory, instrumentation and cone penetration testing (CPT) data; assist with preparation of borehole logs, subsurface profiles, figures and data summaries.
- Prepare organized and traceable calculation packages and assist with geotechnical analyses, including slope stability, seepage, settlement, bearing capacity and liquefaction assessments, following appropriate training and under senior guidance.
- Assist with geotechnical design for tailings storage facilities, water-retaining dams, mine waste facilities, foundations, embankments, slopes and related mine infrastructure.
- Support construction monitoring, field reviews, materials testing and documentation of site observations.
- Assist with preparation of proposals, technical memoranda, reports, drawings, specifications and presentation materials.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams and follow Stantec's quality, health, safety and environmental procedures.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Understanding of fundamental soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering concepts, with an interest in mining, tailings and dam engineering.
- Ability to organize and evaluate technical data, document assumptions and calculations, and apply sound engineering judgement under supervision.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel for data collation, reduction and analysis.
- Exposure to geotechnical software such as GeoStudio, Rocscience products, PLAXIS, gINT/OpenGround, CPeT-IT or similar tools is an asset.
- Ability to participate effectively in a project team and communicate clearly with colleagues, contractors and clients.
- Strong written and verbal communication, attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety.
- Willingness and ability to travel to project sites and undertake field assignments, including work in remote locations, as required.
- Valid Canadian driver's license and access to a vehicle.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Geological Engineering from a recognized university, with geotechnical coursework. A master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering is an asset.
- Recent graduate or up to approximately three years of relevant geotechnical experience.
- Eligible to pursue licensure as a Professional Engineer in Ontario.
- Ability to live and work in Canada.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements, including inclement weather.
