Your Opportunity
The Senior Mechanical Recreation Specialist provides technical leadership for the planning, design, construction, and renewal of recreation facilities. The role focuses on high-performance mechanical systems for arenas, aquatic centres, fieldhouses, community centres, and other public-use facilities. The specialist works with clients and multidisciplinary teams to develop practical, resilient, energy-efficient solutions that respond to operational needs, life-cycle costs, climate, and community priorities.
Your Key Responsibilities
Lead mechanical engineering and design for new construction, expansion, modernization, and rehabilitation of recreation facilities.
Provide specialist input for arenas and ice plants, aquatic facilities, gymnasiums, fieldhouses, community centres, and multi-use recreation complexes.
Develop and review heating, ventilation and air-conditioning, plumbing, hydronic, heat-recovery, controls, and building automation system designs.
Provide senior technical oversight for the design and renewal of ammonia or carbon-dioxide arena refrigeration systems and associated heat recovery, as applicable to the project.
Provide senior technical oversight for natatorium air systems, humidity control, corrosion-resistant design, pool water treatment and mechanical interfaces, and energy optimization.
Prepare and review design criteria, calculations, drawings, specifications, technical memoranda, reports, cost opinions, and construction documentation.
Lead mechanical system assessments, existing-building investigations, feasibility studies, facility condition reviews, decarbonization studies, and renewal planning, including phased renovations, occupied-facility construction, and operational continuity planning.
Develop high-performance mechanical design strategies incorporating electrification and low-carbon heating, coordinate energy modelling, and support greenhouse-gas reduction planning.
Complete technical reviews and quality-control checks to confirm designs are coordinated, constructible, maintainable, and aligned with applicable codes and standards.
Coordinate mechanical requirements with architecture, structural, electrical, civil, energy, sustainability, and specialty consultants.
Engage facility operators, user groups, municipal representatives, contractors, and other stakeholders to understand operational requirements and resolve technical issues.
Support construction through shop-drawing reviews, responses to requests for information, site reviews, deficiency identification, commissioning support, and closeout.
Support mechanical project delivery under alternative delivery models, including design-build, construction management, and public-private partnerships.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers, designers, technologists, and project teams.
Support proposals, interviews, client relationship development, project capture planning, and the growth of the recreation-facility practice.
Contribute lessons learned, technical standards, design tools, and knowledge-sharing across the mechanical and Buildings teams.
Maintain a minimum utilization of 70%.
Travel to project sites, including northern and remote communities, when required.
