The Strategic Account Manager (SAM) is responsible for delivering on sales and profitability quota targets, exceeding organizational strategic selling objectives and retaining, penetrating and growing Business Essentials and Growth Category sales across a defined book of strategic/large market accounts. The SAM serves as a primary day-to-day contact for buyers, influencers and operational decision makers, and works together with Growth Category Specialists (such as Facilities, IT, Furniture, Print, Promo), Customer Service Team, Strategic Account Leader, Customer Success Team and other company resources to manage and grow the customer relationship.
The Strategic Account Manager (SAM) is responsible for driving profitable growth, customer retention, and category expansion across a portfolio of strategic large-market accounts. Working in partnership with the Strategic Account Leader (SAL), the SAM develops and executes account strategies, builds relationships with key decision-makers and influencers, identifies growth opportunities, and leads the day-to-day activities required to increase customer value and share of wallet. The role requires strong consultative selling skills, business acumen, and the ability to navigate complex customer environments.
Specifically, You Will
- Manage and grow a portfolio of large market accounts by driving retention strategies, category penetration, customer compliance, and maximizing profitable sales growth
- Execute customer-facing sales activities, account development plans, business reviews, and funnel management to achieve sales and strategic selling objectives
- Collaborate with Growth Category Specialists and internal business partners to identify, develop, and implement customer solutions that drive long-term growth and customer value.
- Partner closely with the Strategic Account Leader to deliver strategic account plans, support renewals, drive customer compliance and maximize customer value.
Some Of What You Need
- Completion of college/university.
- Consultative selling, solution presentation and negotiation skills, with the ability to interact with tact and diplomacy.
- Minimum 3 years outside/B2B sales or account management experience, including a proven track record of delivering on results to plan in a largen market / enterprise capacity.
- Business, financial and operational acumen, including the ability to analyze customer data and leverage industry trends to build tailored solutions.
- Ability to navigate systems including CRM (SFDC), Staples proprietary systems (Alpha), and proficiency in the Microsoft suite of products.
- 3-5 years funnel management experience, working within a CRM tool such as SFDC .
- Strong understanding of sales processes and working in a team sales environment.
Physical Demands/working Conditions
- Field work, with daily travel to customer locations to execute in-person customer meetings.
- Travel out of market or into Staples offices on an as-needed basis for training, team meetings, conferences, etc.
- Requires regular use of computer/keyboard, telephone and standard office technology.
