Original job description

Help validate flight code that actually flies.

StarSpec Technologies is hiring a Software Support Specialist to prototype, test and validate mission-critical flight software across our satellite, balloon-borne and constellation programs. You'll work alongside department leads on high-profile sub-orbital payloads for NASA, ESA and CSA, on CSA-funded missions such as InspireSAT and TARDIGRADE, and on StarSpec's own satellite production line.

What you'll do

Prototype, test and validate flight code and processes with department leads
Design and run performance tests that prove mission, project and production requirements are met
Validate flight code on-site under AI&T (assembly, integration and test) conditions, following our review and production process
Integrate software with client and customer infrastructure on-site, and write the hand-off documentation
Support software, network and general computing work across a small team

What you bring (in order of priority)

Proficiency with software-hardware integration of flight-code (i.e. mechatronics) in developing low-level, high-performance, and modular software interfaces;
Proficiency with low-level programming languages for flight code development with a preference in proficiency and experience in C and Rust programming languages;
Proficiency in computer system maintenance, with a preference for proficiency in Linux (Ubuntu or similar Unix-based systems);
Proficiency in effectively utilizing AI tools and workflows with well-established engineering practices and procedures for ensuring fidelity, security, and performance;
Experience with using project tracking, management, and code revision tools, in particular Git and GitHub;
Experience with system networking and maintenance, in particular developing flight networks for groundstation software and servers;

General requirements

Bachelor's or Graduate-level degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering Science, Engineering Physics, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a remote / hybrid setting.
Strong communication skills for interacting with clients, team members, and external partners.
Willingness to travel occasionally for testing and flight campaigns.

The details

Type: Full/Part-time contract, starting October 2026, with a path to permanent full-time within 6 months
Pay: $38.75–$43.50 per hour, based on experience
Location: Ayr, Ontario. Hybrid.
EITs: We provide the supervision you need to progress toward your P.Eng. with PEO.

We offer flexible working hours and remote work opportunities, allowing you to achieve a healthy work-life balance while contributing to pioneering space technologies. As a part of the New Space movement, we are focused on deploying innovative solutions quickly and efficiently, avoiding the over-engineered processes that slow down progress.

For Engineers in Training (EITs), we provide the necessary supervision to help you progress towards obtaining your Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) license under the jurisdiction of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).

If you're passionate about space technologies and eager to contribute to cutting-edge aerospace engineering, we'd love to hear from you!
