Stathera is a fabless semiconductor company focused on providing cutting-edge MEMS-based timing solutions. With offices in Montreal, Toronto and Boston, our team is re-architecting the traditional quartz-based timing industry with the introduction of state-of-the-art DualMode™ frequency technology. This breakthrough innovation is redefining what is possible in timing applications and synchronization and has the potential to transform the multi-billion-dollar electronics timing industry.

INTRODUCTION TO ROLE

Stathera is looking for a Systems Engineer II who enjoys connecting physics, measurement data and algorithms to solve system-level problems. We encourage candidates with a Master's degree and relevant experience, or a PhD, in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics or a related field to apply.

The successful candidate will gain hands-on experience in system-level modelling and algorithm development for precision timing products in a fast-moving, collaborative and high-performing startup environment. The role sits within the Characterization and Systems Engineering team, which bridges our MEMS and ASIC design teams. You will model how our MEMS oscillators behave across temperature, time and operating conditions, analyze large characterization datasets, and develop the algorithms and specifications that improve frequency stability and timing accuracy at the system level.

The Systems Engineer II reports directly to the VP of Systems Engineering. This is a full-time (40 hours per week), hybrid position based at our Montreal office.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Build system-level models of MEMS oscillators that capture resonator dynamics (including nonlinear effects), temperature behaviour, aging and noise, and use them to predict product performance.
  • Analyze large characterization datasets (wafer probe, final test, temperature and long-term stability measurements) to identify the physical mechanisms that limit frequency stability and timing accuracy.
  • Develop and validate algorithms that estimate and correct oscillator frequency error, from physics-based models to data-driven approaches.
  • Collaborate with the MEMS and ASIC teams to define system-level specifications and error budgets for new products.
  • Work with the ASIC team to evaluate the trade-off between an algorithm's performance and its hardware cost (compute, memory, power).
  • Plan and run experiments on lab and automated test setups to validate models and algorithms against measured devices.
  • Develop and maintain analysis tools and simulation code in Python and MATLAB.
  • Document results in technical reports and present them to engineering teams and leadership.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics or a related field, with at least 2 years of relevant industry or research experience, or a PhD in one of these fields.
  • Strong foundation in at least one of: signal processing, estimation and control theory, statistical modelling, or physics-based modelling of electromechanical systems.
  • Strong programming skills in Python or MATLAB, including working with large experimental datasets.
  • Experience going from measurement to model: designing experiments, analyzing data and validating models against it.
  • Experience writing technical reports and presenting results.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English, needed for regular collaboration with colleagues in Toronto and Boston and with international partners. French is an asset.

DESIRED SKILLS

We don't expect any one candidate to have all of the skills below. If you bring depth in some of them and are keen to learn the rest, we encourage you to apply.

  • Knowledge of oscillators or precision timing (frequency stability, phase noise, Allan deviation, temperature compensation).
  • Familiarity with MEMS resonators or other electromechanical devices.
  • Experience with time-series modelling or prediction, such as Kalman filtering, system identification or machine learning.
  • Familiarity with mixed-signal or digital hardware, or with implementing algorithms on resource-constrained hardware (fixed-point arithmetic, embedded firmware).
  • Hands-on experience with timing or RF test equipment (phase noise analyzers, frequency counters, time interval analyzers) and temperature chambers.
  • Comfortable working across disciplines and explaining technical trade-offs to engineers with different backgrounds.
  • Takes ownership of open-ended problems and enjoys turning them into concrete results.
