About Steele's
Steele's Transportation Group has been moving freight across Alberta for 70 years (since 1957). We run scheduled LTL service and local pickup and delivery (P&D) from our terminals in Calgary and Edmonton, with our busiest lanes in the Calgary–Red Deer–Edmonton corridor.
We are an asset-based carrier. Our dedicated fleet combines company-owned equipment, owner-operators working as subcontractors, and carrier partners. Steele's is part of FMi Logistics Group, and our reputation for service is the thing we protect every day.

The Role
We are hiring a Dispatch Coordinator for our Edmonton Terminal. This is an operational planning role, not a load-assignment desk. You will take ownership of the daily movement of freight, from building the route plan through to the last completed stop, and you will actively manage that plan as the day changes.
Every day you will balance five outcomes: keep people and equipment safe and Hours of Service (HOS) compliant, meet customer appointments, keep drivers productive, cut empty kilometres and waiting time, and keep the plan visible and current for the whole team.
You will direct experienced drivers and owner-operators, work side by side with Customer Service and the dock, and make sound calls without escalating every exception.
What You'll Do
Plan the day
- Build efficient multi-stop P&D routes from appointments, geography, freight characteristics, driver capability, equipment and available capacity.
- Use existing driver and equipment capacity before adding extra resources, and look for ways to improve stop density and reduce empty kilometres.
- Coordinate with the warehouse and dock on freight readiness and driver start times so the plan can actually be executed.
- Coordinate pickups, deliveries and transfers between terminals.
Manage the plan
- Monitor driver locations, open stops, urgent pickups and appointment risk, and adjust before a service failure happens.
- Give drivers and owner-operators clear instructions for pickups, deliveries and schedule changes, and resolve delays, equipment problems and customer concerns.
- Respond quickly to breakdowns, traffic, weather and missed appointments with realistic recovery options.
- Keep trucks and trailers assigned to the right freight and coordinate repairs and maintenance with the Terminal Manager.
Protect safety and service
- Build plans that keep every driver within Hours of Service (HOS) regulations.
- Tell Customer Service about exceptions early and keep customers informed of shipment status and estimated delivery times.
- Prioritize urgent freight without damaging the rest of the day's commitments.
Close the loop
- Close manifests, keep driver messages current and make sure proof of delivery (POD) is uploaded in the TMS.
- Track on-time pickup and delivery, driver productivity and route efficiency, and use what you learn to build a better plan tomorrow.
- Identify recurring customer, dock or routing problems and help fix them permanently.
What You Bring
Must have
- 2+ years in transportation dispatch, route planning or fleet coordination.
- Route-planning aptitude: you can turn orders, geography and constraints into an efficient plan and re-plan quickly when the day changes.
- Calm, clear decision-making under pressure, with the confidence to give firm, fair direction to experienced drivers.
- Accountability and strong prioritization: you own the plan, look for solutions before explanations, and can tell a real service emergency from everyday noise.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Strong assets
- Experience in local P&D, LTL, courier or final-mile, foodservice distribution, or another high-volume multi-stop operation.
- Experience directing owner-operators, independent contractors or mixed fleets.
- Knowledge of Edmonton and area geography.
- Familiarity with HOS rules and electronic logging devices (ELD).
- Comfort with a TMS, GPS or telematics, Microsoft 365 and KPI reporting.
- Post-secondary training in logistics or business administration.
We'll train you on
- Steele's customer requirements, our TMS workflows and our internal procedures.
