Manager, Environmental Affairs

Job Overview
Safety is the Core Value of Stelco and the individual will make Safety the #1 priority in the execution of all work activities, including monitoring contractor/vendor safety in support of work efforts. This is an existing vacancy.
This role will include leading a team for the facility’s compliance with environmental regulations, and continuous improvement in environmental performance.
This position reports to the Director, Environmental Affairs.
Job Responsibilities
- Supervise environmental issues at Lake Erie Works within the Environmental Management System (EMS), and ensure that the EMS continues to meet ISO 14001 standards.
- Collaborate with Stelco Operations on continual environmental improvement trials and projects. This includes preparation and submission of enviornmental compliance approval applications.
- Oversee activities of Lake Erie Works Environmental Affairs Department staff. Environmental staff are required to assist the plant staff (such as, but not limited to, Operations and Engineering) with environmental compliance including making recommendations on environmental controls, audit facilities for environmental compliance, ensure required reporting is completed on time (legal requirements and internal reports)
- Provide training and coaching of Lake Erie Works Environmental Affairs Department staff.
- Liaise with government officials such as the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks, and Environment and Climate Change Canada dealing with environmental compliance.
- Assist Stelco Operations with environmental emergency situations such as potential spills.
- Represent Stelco actively in multi-stakeholder groups such as the Nanticoke Environment Committee, and other committees/groups
- Liaise with community neighbours on environment-related matters, if and as required.
- Manage and direct contracted service companies working on environmental projects, where applicable.
- Report writing and submissions – as required by legislation and internal reports as required by Senior Management

Job Qualifications
- Honours degree or diploma in Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Science or a related field
- At least 10 years of relevant experience in an industrial environmental role, with leadership assignments
- Established experience in managing a team successfully
- Familiarity with current environmental regulatory requirements
- Comprehensive understanding of environmental issues across all media including, but not limited to, air, water, ground
- Previous work experience in the advanced manufacturing sector is an asset

- The facility operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
