Original job description

At Stellar, we aim to build a studio where people actually want to work. We face productions inevitable ups and downs as a supportive, truly connected team, prioritizing open communication over anyone working in isolation. We value honesty, creativity, and looking out for one another.

The Opportunity:

We are staffing up for a new Marvel Studios streaming series, and we are looking for a highly talented, empathetic 2D FX Supervisor to lead our effects team.We need a leader who can conceptualize and establish the aesthetic, creative, and technical quality standards for all hand drawn 2D sequences on the show. The ideal candidate is an excellent problem solver, a workflow visionary, and a supportive mentor who knows how to pull the absolute best work out of their artists.

In this role, success looks like:

Artistic Vision and Leadership

  • Set the creative and technical bar for all hand drawn 2D FX on the show, ensuring everything from natural elements (water, smoke, dust, fire) to supernatural magic perfectly hits the Marvel standard.
  • Run department dailies and participate in the wider review process, providing your artists with clear, constructive, and empathetic feedback.
  • Guide, mentor, and support your team of 2D FX artists, helping them troubleshoot difficult shots while keeping department morale high.

Pipeline and Workflow Strategy

  • Collaborate heavily with the Pipeline group to build, test, and improve 2D FX processes, toolsets, and best practices from the ground up.
  • Work closely with the CG Supervisor and other department heads to integrate 2D effects into the broader shot workflow in the most efficient way possible.
  • Maintain a strong knowledge of innovative 2D FX animation technologies, always offering proactive suggestions on how to make the day to day smoother for the crew.

The Requirements

Must Haves:

  • Experience: 5 plus years of industry experience with 2D effects in episodic television or feature animation, including previous experience in a Lead or Supervisor capacity.
  • Core Skills: A masterful artistic eye, strong composition skills, impeccable timing, and the ability to produce the highest possible quality effects.
  • Software: Expert level experience with Toon Boom Harmony.
  • Leadership: You are a natural problem solver who stays calm under pressure, knows how to find creative workarounds, and genuinely enjoys helping other artists grow.
  • Eligibility: You must be legally eligible to work in British Columbia.

Nice to Haves:

  • Deep experience designing stylized or non realistic effects.
A Bachelor degree or college diploma in Animation (though a spectacular reel and leadership track record always speak louder than a piece of paper).
  • Working knowledge of Flow Production Tracking (formerly ShotGrid) & Nuke

Why Join Stellar?

  • Flexible Environment:  We offer a flexible hybrid schedule that will vary with project and team requirements.
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Extended health, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Culture: A collaborative, supportive environment where your artistic skills and ideas are truly valued.
  • Compensation: The salary range for this supervisor position is between $110,000 and $125,000 CAD, based on your level of leadership experience.
