Original job description

At Stellar, we aim to build a studio where people actually want to work. We face productions inevitable ups and downs as a supportive, truly connected team, prioritizing open communication over anyone working in isolation. We value honesty, creativity, and looking out for one another.

The Opportunity:

We are staffing up for a new Marvel Studios streaming series, and we are looking for a highly talented Lighting and Compositing Lead to guide our illuminating crew!

This role combines many complementary skills, including a strong aesthetic eye, a deep understanding of production, color theory, and material design, as well as a masterful knowledge of rendering technology and workflows. We need a leader who can intuitively understand production expectations, clearly communicate the department needs, and engage in high level discussions with other supervisors to ensure this project is executed to the absolute highest standards.

In this role, success looks like:

Leadership and Mentorship

  • Lead the creative and technical needs of the lighting and compositing department, ensuring execution always meets our prestige standards.
  • Collaborate seamlessly with other departments and supervisors to work out technical issues, establish smooth workflows, and hit deadlines.
  • Partner closely with the production team to map out clear task assignments and realistic department schedules.

Lighting and Compositing Execution

  • Lead by example! You will still be hands-on, bringing shots and sequences to life by lighting, rendering, and compositing to meet the creative look of the show.
  • Take full responsibility for the lighting, rendering, and compositing stages of production, delivering incredible shots and completing corrections as requested by the Supervisor, Director, or Client.
  • Participate in Asset Look Development or Light Rig creation for use by other departments, setting the visual tone for the entire team.

The Requirements

Must Haves:

  • Experience: 5 plus years of production experience as a Lighting Artist, with previous experience in a Lead role or as a Senior artist who is truly ready to step up.
  • Software: Excellent understanding and hands on production experience with Maya and Nuke.
  • Core Skills: A great aesthetic eye for light, color, and composition. You also possess excellent problem solving skills and the ability to communicate department needs clearly.
  • Eligibility: You must be legally eligible to work in Canada.

Nice to Haves:

  • Solid experience with the Redshift render engine is a huge plus!
  • Experience with additional industry software like Flow Production Tracking (formerly ShotGrid), Arnold, and Deadline.
  • The ability to quickly identify visual cues and follow directions perfectly from art references.
  • Experience in non-photorealistic rendering (NPR)
  • Thorough understanding of color management and an Aces based workflow

Why Join Stellar?

  • Flexible Environment:  We offer a flexible hybrid schedule that will vary with project and team requirements.
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Extended health, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Culture: A collaborative, supportive environment where your artistic skills and ideas are truly valued.
  • Compensation: The salary range for this Lead position is between $93,000 and $100,000 CAD per year, based on your level of leadership experience.

At Stellar Creative Lab, we believe diversity and inclusion are key to creativity and collaboration. We’re committed to building a supportive, open, and diverse community where everyone can thrive. We're always looking for ways to improve accessibility, so feel free to share any feedback or suggestions with us.
