Original job description

About Stellarex Energy

At Stellarex Energy, we are building foundational technology for the clean energy transition by harnessing stellarator fusion to provide safe, reliable, and carbon-free baseload power. Turning this ambitious physics and engineering goal into industrial reality requires an exceptional, mission-driven team. If you are ready to solve one of humanity's greatest technological challenges and build transformative hardware from the ground up, we invite you to join our team in the Greater Toronto Area.

Role Overview

Stellarex Energy is seeking an experienced, highly technical Magnet Engineer to drive the design, fabrication, testing, and integration of high-field superconducting magnetic coil systems for our prototype stellarator facility. Reporting to the technical leadership of the project, you will serve as a technical authority responsible for complex 3D non-axisymmetric High-Temperature Superconductor (HTS) and Low-Temperature Superconductor (LTS) magnet coils, advanced cryogenic cooling networks, and high-precision power electronics/power supplies. In this role, you will bridge computational physics flux surface requirements into robust, manufacturable magnet hardware.

Core Responsibilities

· Superconducting Coil Design & Execution: Play a major role mechanical, electromagnetic, and structural design of high-field 3D non-axisymmetric HTS/LTS superconducting coils, winding topologies, structural supports, and coil casings for prototype stellarator devices.

· Cryogenic Cooling & Thermal Management: Drive the design and integration of cryogenic cooling networks (cryostats, forced-flow helium loops, and conduction-cooled structures) to ensure thermal stability and quench prevention during steady-state operations.

· Power Supplies & Power Electronics: Oversee the specification, procurement, and control system integration of high-current, low-ripple power supplies, quench protection circuits, and energy extraction systems.

· Vendor Qualification & Manufacturing Oversight: Manage external industrial suppliers, conductor manufacturers, and precision winding fabricators, executing factory acceptance testing (FAT) and cold-testing validation.

· Cross-Functional Physics & Systems Integration: Collaborate closely with plasma physicists, 3D CAD integration engineers, and plant infrastructure teams to resolve mechanical space envelopes, Lorentz force reaction structures, and assembly sequences.

Required Qualifications & Experience

· Education: Master’s Degree or Ph.D. (preferred) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related deep-tech discipline.

· Experience: 5+ years executing complex magnet engineering programs, superconducting system fabrication, or major high-field magnet facilities.

· Superconducting Technology Mastery: Proven expertise in HTS and LTS conductors, coil winding technologies, insulation systems, and electromagnetic force management.

· Cryogenics & Power Electronics Expertise: Deep technical knowledge of cryogenic cooling systems (liquid/gaseous helium), quench detection/protection, and high-current power supply design.

· Project & Quality Focus: Demonstrated track record executing engineering workflows, managing vendor technical requirements, quality assurance protocols and phase-gate design review.

Compensation & Benefits

Stellarex offers an industry-leading competitive base salary paired with meaningful company equity options, providing direct ownership in our long-term enterprise growth. We also offer comprehensive health and dental coverage, professional development support, and relocation assistance to the Greater Toronto Area.

How to Apply

Please submit your CV and cover letter to careers@stellarex.energy. Stellarex Energy is an equal opportunity employer committed to workforce diversity.
