Manager, Corporate Accounting & Financial Reporting
Toronto
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Manager, Corporate Accounting & Financial Reporting is a hands-on member of the Corporate Accounting team, combining technical accounting and external financial reporting with day-to-day corporate accounting and treasury operations. Reporting to the Director of Finance, Corporate, this role is the preparer of the corporate month-end close and of the quarterly and annual consolidated financial statements and MD&A, executes treasury activities under the Director’s review, and works closely with Accounts Payable and FP&A to give leadership an accurate and timely view of cash.
My client is a TSX-listed Intelligent Transportation Systems company growing through acquisition, with operations in Canada, the U.S., and Europe. The successful candidate will bring strong IFRS technical depth, public company reporting experience, and an operator’s mindset: someone equally comfortable writing a technical accounting memo, building a cash flow statement that ties, reconciling a bank account, and tightening a close process. This is a hands-on, individual contributor role with no direct reports at the outset; the scope is expected to grow as the company scales.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Corporate Month-End Close
- Prepare the corporate month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close, including journal entries, accruals, prepaids, intercompany entries, and balance sheet account reconciliations, for review by the Director of Finance, Corporate.
- Maintain the corporate close calendar and checklist; coordinate inputs and deadlines with business unit finance teams (Tolling and ITS), Accounts Payable, and FP&A.
- Prepare intercompany reconciliations and eliminations, and foreign currency revaluation and translation using correct period-end rates (IAS 21).
- Prepare monthly corporate results and variance analysis to support management reporting.
- Drive a faster, more predictable close through standardized workpapers, templates, and automation in NetSuite.
2. Financial Reporting & Consolidation
- Prepare consolidated quarterly and annual financial statements in accordance with IFRS, including notes, disclosures, and supporting schedules.
- Prepare the consolidated statement of cash flows, including working capital movements, non-cash items, and the effect of foreign exchange on cash, fully reconciled to the balance sheet.
- Own the integrity of the consolidation and reporting workbooks, ensuring every check and tie-out is cleared and every figure is traceable to support before review.
- Prepare drafts of MD&A, earnings press releases, and other continuous disclosure documents for review.
- Run the consolidation process across corporate and subsidiary entities, and help onboard newly acquired businesses to the r
- Reporting calendar, chart of accounts, policies, and NetSuite, including purchase price allocation support.
- Prepare technical accounting position papers independently on complex transactions (business combinations, revenue under IFRS 15, leases under IFRS 16, share-based compensation, debt modifications and covenant matters, and disposals) and maintain accounting policy documentation.
- Monitor new and amended accounting standards and lead their implementation, including IFRS 18.
- Support statutory financial statements and income tax provisions for corporate and foreign subsidiaries, coordinating with external tax advisors.
3. Treasury & Cash Management
- Execute day-to-day treasury activities under the review and approval of the Director of Finance, Corporate, including daily cash positioning, bank reconciliations, intercompany funding and cash sweeps across Canadian, U.S., and European entities, foreign exchange conversions, and payment run preparation.
- Operate payment controls, including callback verification of payment instructions, dual authorization, and banking portal access in line with the delegation of authority.
- Prepare debt-related schedules, including interest calculations and draw and repayment support, and the quarterly covenant compliance calculations and certificates for lenders; track covenant headroom and add-back caps during the quarter and flag potential breaches early.
- Support cash settlements under transition services agreements with acquired businesses, and maintain the register of surety bonds and letters of credit.
- Support liquidity, capital resources, and financial risk disclosures (IFRS 7) in the financial statements and MD&A.
4. Cash Forecasting & Accounts Payable Partnership
- Partner with FP&A on the weekly cash flow forecast, providing actual cash results, payment timing, debt service, and corporate inflows and outflows, and analyzing forecast-to-actual variances.
- Work closely with the Accounts Payable team on payment prioritization, vendor issues, accrual completeness, and cut-off, so that the cash forecast and the month-end close reflect the same information.
- Review corporate cash application and accounts receivable reconciliations to keep the cash forecast and balance sheet accurate.
- Partner with the Director of Finance, Corporate and the Accounts Payable team to strengthen AP processes and controls, including invoice approval workflows, matching, and vendor master data.
5. External Audit & Internal Controls
- Serve as the day-to-day contact for the external auditors on corporate accounting and reporting matters, preparing audit and review support packages and managing requests against agreed timelines.
- Operate and document key controls over the close, treasury, and financial reporting processes as a first-line control owner, partnering with the Internal Controls team on control design, testing, and remediation.
- Support disclosure controls and procedures and management’s quarterly and annual certifications (NI 52-109), and readiness for U.S. regulatory requirements.
- Proactively identify, document, and escalate technical accounting, audit, and control risks to the Director of Finance, Corporate.
6. Systems & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Help optimize the use of NetSuite, Oracle EPM, financial statement and disclosure management tools (including Anaplan and Workiva), and banking platforms to improve the efficiency of the close, consolidation, and treasury processes.
- Liaise with business unit finance teams, legal counsel, the transfer agent, and investor relations to support accurate and timely disclosure; prepare financial materials for earnings calls and analyst packages.
- Support acquisition integration, special projects, and ad hoc analysis as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA designation (CPA Canada) required.
- Minimum 4 years of progressive accounting experience, including public accounting (Big Four or national firm strongly preferred) and ideally at least 1 year in industry in a financial reporting, controllership, or treasury role.
- Public company reporting experience required (TSX, NASDAQ, NYSE, or equivalent), including preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements, and MD&A.
- Strong technical knowledge of IFRS, with a track record of writing technical accounting memos independently; working knowledge of US GAAP and SEC reporting is an asset.
- Hands-on treasury experience, including cash management, bank reconciliations, payment controls, and debt covenant reporting.
- Experience with multi-entity, multi-currency consolidation; experience integrating acquired businesses is an asset.
- Advanced Excel skills; NetSuite experience is an asset, and experience with Oracle EPM, Anaplan, or Workiva is also an asset.
Competencies
- A hands-on doer who is comfortable preparing the work, not only reviewing it, while looking for ways to make the process better.
- Exceptional attention to detail: work is tied out and internally consistent before it goes for review.
- Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to draft clear auditor-facing memos and executive-facing summaries.
- Highly organized, with a demonstrated ability to manage competing close, reporting, and treasury deadlines in a fast-paced, acquisitive environment.
- Collaborative working style, building effective relationships across Finance, FP&A, Accounts Payable, business unit finance teams, and operations, including getting results without direct authority.
- Self-directed, with sound judgment on when to escalate complex accounting matters.
