Original job description

Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Strathcona Resources Ltd. is one of North America’s fastest growing pure play heavy oil producers with operations focused on thermal oil and enhanced oil recovery near the Cold Lake and Lloydminster regions of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Strathcona is committed to doing business the right way, guided by our core values: Integrity, Energy, and Intelligence. These values define who we are as a company, how we work together, and how we make decisions: We prioritize respect, accountability, and collaboration. That means everyone can shape and strengthen our culture and drive results in meaningful ways. Our people bring energy and curiosity to solve problems and deliver results. Be part of a team where performance, collaboration, and innovation come together to drive success.

We are seeking a Field-Based Engineering Student to join our Cold Lake Production team for a four-month work term. This role is ideal for an engineering student who has completed one or two years of post-secondary education and is interested in gaining hands-on field exposure within a thermal oil operation.

The successful candidate will work closely with field operations, maintenance, and production engineering staff, supporting day-to-day field activities while developing a practical understanding of how engineering decisions translate into safe and reliable operations.

This position is field-based and located in the Cold Lake region starting May 2027.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support daily field production activities through data gathering, review, and reporting
  • Work alongside field operations staff to help troubleshoot well performance issues
  • Assist with monitoring production, downtime, and operating performance trends
  • Support data quality reviews for wells, pads, and surface equipment
  • Assist engineers and technologists with day-to-day tasks and special projects

What You’ll Learn:

  • How thermal oil and SAGD operations function in a real-world field environment
  • The relationship between production engineering, operations, maintenance, and safety
  • How production data is collected, validated, and used to make operational decisions
  • Exposure to field equipment, instrumentation, and facility operations

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an engineering program (mechanical, chemical, petroleum, or related discipline)
  • Completed at least one year of post-secondary studies
  • Strong interest in field operations and hands-on learning
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Comfortable working in a field-based setting

Great things aren’t done by one person, they’re done by a team.

We believe meaningful results come from people with unwavering commitment to integrity, energy, and intelligence – how we show up matters just as much as what we deliver. We value our work, our communities, and our commitments – but most of all, we value the team of people who make what we do possible.
