Original job description

Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Strathcona Resources Ltd. is one of North America’s fastest growing pure play heavy oil producers with operations focused on thermal oil and enhanced oil recovery near the Cold Lake and Lloydminster regions of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Strathcona is committed to doing business the right way, guided by our core values: Integrity, Energy, and Intelligence. These values define who we are as a company, how we work together, and how we make decisions: We prioritize respect, accountability, and collaboration. That means everyone can shape and strengthen our culture and drive results in meaningful ways. Our people bring energy and curiosity to solve problems and deliver results. Be part of a team where performance, collaboration, and innovation come together to drive success.

We are seeking motivated Field-Based Engineering Students to join our Lloydminster Thermal team for the summer of 2027, supporting field operations across our thermal facilities in the North Battleford area. Reporting to the Well Lead, students will work alongside experienced engineers, technologists, and operations personnel to support day-to-day production activities, troubleshoot well and equipment performance, and gain practical experience in a SAGD operating environment.

The positions will begin in May 2027 for a 4-month term and follow a 7 days on / 7 days off rotational schedule, providing students with an opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge in a real-world operating environment.

Essential Functions

Support daily production activities through data collection, analysis, and reporting.
Work alongside operations teams to identify and troubleshoot well and equipment performance issues.
Assist with monitoring production trends, downtime, and operational performance.
Support engineers and technologists with field activities and special projects.
Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety while working alongside Strathcona employees and contractors.
Gain hands-on experience with SAGD operations, field equipment, and production processes.

Qualifications Include

Currently enrolled in an Engineering program (Mechanical, Chemical, Petroleum, or related discipline).
Completed at least one year of post-secondary education.
Strong interest in field operations and hands-on learning.
Previous industrial or field experience is considered an asset.
Valid Class 5 driver's license.
Self-motivated, safety-conscious, and eager to learn, with strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Why Strathcona

At Strathcona, we're committed to developing the next generation of talent in Canada's oil and gas industry. Our summer student program provides an opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience, learn from experienced engineering and operations teams, and develop technical skills in a SAGD operating environment. Successful summer students may be considered for future full-time employment opportunities with Strathcona Resources, based on business needs and available positions.

Great things aren’t done by one person, they’re done by a team.

We believe meaningful results come from people with unwavering commitment to integrity, energy, and intelligence – how we show up matters just as much as what we deliver.
