Original job description
About Studio.Energy
Studio.Energy helps leaders navigate the business of energy by transforming data, information, and noise into timely, trusted knowledge. Founded by economist and energy thought leader Peter Tertzakian, the Studio has built a modern knowledge engine that combines technology, rigorous analysis, and human judgment to rapidly interpret change as conditions evolve. The Studio's work is independent, non-partisan, and grounded in careful analysis, validated data, and credible sources. Through curated knowledge, expert interpretation, and informed discussion, it helps leaders interpret change, explore implications, and make better-informed decisions when the stakes are highest.
About the Role
Support Studio.Energy's competitiveness research by collecting, standardizing, and maintaining multi-jurisdictional datasets; building and validating model inputs for comparator basins; and producing analysis-ready outputs that allow Canada's oil and gas sectors to be benchmarked against international competitors.
The Energy Data Analyst will be responsible for sourcing, cleaning, and structuring fiscal, regulatory, cost, and production data across each comparator jurisdiction, building repeatable ingestion workflows so datasets can be refreshed as new information becomes available. The role will support Studio.Energy’s proprietary CapFlow modelling by preparing inputs such as royalties, operating costs, F&D costs, capital costs, transport costs, and other data sets for new basins, validating outputs, and flagging anomalies.
The Energy Data Analyst will compile and maintain production histories, reserves estimates, decline curves, well-cost benchmarks, and other jurisdiction-level datasets that feed the competitiveness framework. Beyond collection, the role is responsible for keeping that data current and production-ready so it can be used to generate charts, analytical insights, and other deliverables. Throughout all of this work, the Energy Data Analyst carries a quality assurance mandate: cross-checking data against primary sources, documenting assumptions, and maintaining a clear audit trail for every input.
What You’ll Do
- Architect, build, and optimize scalable data pipelines to process and analyze diverse financial, economic, and policy-related datasets.
- Design and develop robust analytics tools and models to extract actionable insights from large and complex energy sector data.
- Lead the application of Python and machine learning for advanced data processing, analysis, and predictive modeling.
- Write and optimize complex SQL queries to drive data transformations, reporting, and analytics.
- Implement advanced data modeling techniques to support economic forecasting, financial analysis, and policy research.
- Transform both structured and unstructured data to drive meaningful insights in energy finance and regulation.
What We’re Looking For
Must-Haves:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Economics, Finance, or a related technical field.
- 3+ years of experience in upstream oil and gas analysis, energy consulting, or a data-focused role in the energy sector
- Advanced Excel skills; comfort building and auditing multi-tab models with scenario toggles
- Intermediate programming skills in Python and deep familiarity with data manipulation libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, Polars, etc.).
- Proven experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- Hands-on experience with modern data engineering frameworks and paradigms.
- A strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and ETL workflows.
- Proficiency in writing complex SQL for data retrieval and transformation.
- Experience sourcing and cleaning data from public regulators (AER, CER, EIA, provincial/state agencies) and commercial databases
Preferred:
- Strong knowledge of upstream economics: royalty structures, F&D costs, operating costs, capital cost estimation, and project-level returns
- Experience in economic modelling.
- Knowledge of energy markets, carbon pricing, and regulatory policies.
Additional information for interested candidates:
This is a 6-month, full-time contract role with possibility of extension for an additional 6-months (project dependent). Approximate start date timing is first or second week of November, and we will work with the successful candidate on that timing.
