Original job description

This role is based in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. The successful candidate must be open to relocation.

Summit Search Group has been retained by Sakku Investments Corporation on the recruitment of a Controller. Founded in 1989 as the development arm of the Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA), Sakku Investments is an Inuit Birthright Corporation headquartered in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, dedicated to representing the interests of all Inuit in the Kivalliq region. The organization’s mission is to create meaningful opportunities for Inuit individuals to participate in the wage economy, while strengthening the KIA’s capacity to enhance quality of life and uphold the commitments of the Nunavut Agreement.

With involvement in over 20 businesses across six strategic pillars, Sakku operates as the economic engine of the Kivalliq region. The portfolio spans energy, health, housing, mining, telecommunications, and transportation, and includes active initiatives such as the Sakku Innovative Building Solutions (SIBS) modular housing factory, a federally funded clean energy program advancing solar and hydroelectric alternatives to diesel power, affiliated airline and sealift operations through Tagjaq, and an expanding health services division. Sakku reinvests revenues directly into Inuit communities, making its financial operations central to the region’s long-term social and economic wellbeing.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the VP Finance, the Controller will play a pivotal leadership role within Sakku’s finance division, overseeing accounting operations across multiple active entities, including Sakku Investments Corporation, Sakku Properties Enterprises, Tagjaq, and Naukik. Leading a team of seven, the Controller will be responsible for the integrity of all financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance activities across the portfolio.

This is a hands-on leadership role suited to a CPA who thrives in complex, multi-entity environments and is motivated by work that carries genuine community significance. The incoming Controller will guide a meaningful systems transition from Sage 50 to Sage Intacct, support year-end close across multiple entities, and help build the internal financial systems and team capacity that will support Sakku’s continued growth. The role is based in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, with staff housing provided, and offers a unique opportunity to contribute to an organization whose financial performance directly strengthens Inuit communities across the Kivalliq region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the full accounting cycle across multiple corporate entities, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance with applicable accounting standards.
  • Lead and develop a finance team of seven, including an Assistant Controller, Accountants, Finance Officers, and Clerks, fostering professional growth and operational efficiency across the division.
  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting processes; coordinate and support external audit processes with multiple auditing firms; and develop annual budgets and forecasts in collaboration with leadership across the Sakku Group.
  • Provide financial analysis and strategic insight to support investment decisions, financing activities, and new business acquisitions across the Sakku portfolio.
  • Lead the transition from Sage 50 to Sage Intacct, overseeing implementation, developing new workflows, and ensuring the team is well supported through the change.
  • Serve as a trusted financial advisor to the VP Finance on internal controls, financial planning, risk management, and long-term strategic direction.

Qualifications

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required.
  • 3 to 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including prior Controller or senior accounting experience in a leadership capacity.
  • Proven experience managing multi-entity or multi-company accounting environments; experience in small-to-mid-sized business settings is valued.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills, with demonstrated experience building and developing finance teams.
  • Experience with Sage 50 and/or Sage Intacct is considered a strong asset.
  • Genuine willingness to relocate to Rankin Inlet, Nunavut; staff housing is provided. Previous northern or remote work experience is considered an asset.
