The Surrey Schools Welcome Centre supports newcomer and ELL students and families navigate all the “new” by strengthening their connections to schools and community, easing their transition to life in Canada, and empowering them to thrive, belong, and participate fully in their new school community. The SWIS Program provides a trusted connection to the school system, helping students and families understand how schools work, access the right resources and supports, and make informed decisions.

The Digital Navigator reports to the Manager , Surrey Schools Welcome Centre. This is an on-site position and may include after school, and evening work. This position follows the district school schedule regarding spring, winter, and summer breaks. The Digital Navigator reports to the Manager, Surrey Schools Welcome Centre.

Typical Responsibilities

Conducts digital literacy programming including, facilitating access to online and remote service delivery through direct coaching; provides workshops and one-to-one support with digital literacy and increases familiarity with remote tools; and strengthens overall digital literacy skills.
Develops client-focused, multilingual materials to support digital literacy for newcomers.
Facilitates online client registration and access to workshops and ensures smooth enrollment and completion of required information in school and other online platforms
Educates clients on privacy, security, and confidentiality in remote environments.
Educates clients on virtual tools used by the schools to connect with students and parents.
Oversees data entry, conducts bulk uploads between databases, analyzes data quality and make recommendations for improvement.
Generates program data reports, ensures data entry and report generation is conducted in a timely manner and meets all funder and school district reporting timelines.
Communicates with database developer to ensure smooth data collection and report generation and advises of updates and enhancements.
Designs client resources and presentations.
Updates program website with newcomer service information and client resources.
Ensures data collection and storage abide by security and privacy policies.
Performs related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Ability to deliver digital literacy workshops and develop multilingual learning tools for newcomers.
Proficiency in the use of online platforms and messaging apps, including WeChat, Telegram, Zoom, Teams; ability to explain complex technology to low digital literacy clients using plain language, ability to deal effectively and courteously with clientele, staff, and the public who are from differing cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Excellent knowledge of Outlook, Microsoft Office Suite, Teams, Zoom and ability to learn and adapt to new technologies required for excellent service delivery, as needed.
Ability to meet funder requirements for client data reporting (advance knowledge of excel, client databases, and software used by SWIS program).
Ability to design client resources in Publisher, Canva, and other design tools.
Ability to use the School Bundle or other school platforms to update program website.
Proficiency in the use of online and social media platforms.
Ability to analyze reports and recommend data quality improvements to meet funder requirements.
Knowledge of settlement and migration policies and issues.
Understanding of the settlement experience.
Knowledge and skills in negotiation, advocacy, conflict resolution and problem solving.
Ability to respond with sensitivity to emergent situations and to use sound judgement when dealing with cross-cultural issues and matters of a confidential nature.
Ability to assist educators with interpreting student needs where cultural differences are a factor.
Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to diverse cultural values and individual experiences.
Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently.
Experience liaising with other service organizations.
Understanding of child development and youth issues.
Oral and written fluency in English.
Oral and written fluency in another language to support a top source country of newcomers will be considered an asset.
Ability to work a flexible schedule to support service delivery needs during the evenings and weekend hours as needed.

Training And Experience

Two or more years of post-secondary education with a focus on database development, website development, database troubleshooting from a post-secondary institution recognized by the district.
A minimum of 1 year of post-secondary education in social sciences, social work or counseling or equivalent from a post-secondary institution recognized by the district, or 1 year of experience providing direct service to newcomers.
A minimum of one year experience working in a multicultural setting. Experience working with refugees an asset.
Mental Health First Aid training is considered an asset.

LICENCES, CERTIFICATES AND REGISTRATIONS

Valid B.C. Driver's License and access to vehicle to provide supports at multiple school locations in Surrey.
