ABOUT THE POSITION
As a key member of Swimming Canada’s High Performance (HP) team, the Data Analyst/NextGen Biomechanist, Olympic Program will be responsible for the collection, tracking, analysis and reporting of various statistical requirements that will help inform decision making in the High Performance Department. This position will also be responsible for providing biomechanic support to Swimming Canada’s targeted NextGen athlete pool through camp, competition and remote support.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own The Podium (OTP) Funding Presentation Support – Olympic Program

- Prepare all data analysis for annual OTP report (Schedule B, targeted athlete pool, validation of benchmarks, Olympic relay projections, etc).
- Produce list of targeted athletes for next two Olympic cycles (Senior, Next Gen).
- Produce athlete projection graphs for all targeted and carded athletes using most up-to-date results and Olympic/Paralympic podium predictions.

- Develop and manage Gap Analysis reporting mechanism (Microsoft forms to Python scripts to final PDF reports for each athlete).
- Prepare other documents for OTP Plan as needed.
- Podium Pathway and Talent Identification

- Develop and maintain all related tools used (i.e. OT calculator, etc.).
- Review and update On Track times and NDPT times as required.
- Establish yearly On Track National Club Rankings and All-Star Athletes report.
- Support the creation of qualifying times for Open Water and Development team initiatives in alignment with the Podium Pathway philosophy.
- Develop and validate the event-specific Year-Over-Year improvement rates model.
- Communicate with National Coaches and produce reports as required.
- Research, develop and validate the next Olympic Games podium, finalist, and semi-finalist time predictions.
- Major Championships Reporting
- Prepare and coordinate statistical competition analysis for each Junior and Senior Championship in advance of event (historical results, records, rankings, etc.)
- Develop detailed relay team combinations and historical benchmarks pre-competition. Update in real-time as required during competition.
- Produce complete Meet Performance Report for summary of National Team results and rankings immediately following each Major Championship.
- Ensure results and rankings database is complete, cleaned and up to date.
- National Team data and systems management
- Develop and maintain a Video Race Analysis database and reporting mechanism to assist with intra-competition race analysis and post-competition gap analysis.

- Produce Junior and Senior Major Competition Benchmarks.

- Create and manage folders and resource hubs as required
- NextGen Team and Competition Support

- In collaboration with the coaching staff, develop and deliver expert biomechanics and performance analysis support at national development camps and National Junior Team competitions.
- Lead video race analysis at identified National Junior Team international benchmark competitions.
- Liaise with Swimming Canada IST staff to align delivery across Senior and NextGen programs.
- Remote Biomechanical Support to NextGen (On Track) Swimmers and Coaches

- Provide analysis and technical recommendations to identified NextGen Swimmers and Coaches through video submissions.
- Use objective data and information to influence and impact performance decisions and enhance knowledge
- Other duties as required.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate degree in sport science, kinesiology or related field with a focus on biomechanics, with practical experience and expertise in sports statistics and data management.
- Practical experience in the sport of swimming as a biomechanist, data analyst or
- Strong organization and planning skills, with the ability to multi-task and work comfortably in a deadline driven environment.
- Strong analytical skills, accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal skills in order to deal with a wide variety of groups.
- Advanced computer skills such as web scraping and knowledge and experience with data visualization tools would be considered an asset. Expert knowledge of Excel is required.
- Ability to work independently on multiple tasks with specific deadlines.
- Familiarity with finding, collecting, and cleaning data from structured data sets, Rest API sources, web scraping, or similar.
- Ability to answer business questions through the use of statistical analysis, identify trends, and present the results through simplest terms visualizations, tables, and reports
- Experience utilizing programming languages for the purposes of data analysis; Python, R, or similar.
- Additional programming language experience considered an asset.
- Research experience, machine learning, collaborative problem-solving, data warehousing, and project management considered an asset.
- Strong verbal and writing skills in English in required, the ability to communicate verbally in French would be considered an asset.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally occasionally, to attend NextGen meets, camps and national activities as required. Ability to work a flexible work schedule and/or overtime as needed to meet the business needs.
WORK LOCATION
There is preference for a candidate working out of the Ottawa, Ontario office, or alternatively based in Toronto, Ontario or Vancouver, British Columbia.
The Ottawa Office is located on the traditional territory of the Algonquin Anishinabek People.
TOTAL REWARDS
The annual base salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications and experience, and within a range of $55,000-60,000.
